    Hi Bob,
I won't be walking tonight after all--yes, I am a total weather wimp! I was hoping to see you though, with a hug and well wishes for a super speedy recovery! If there is anything I can do please let me know. I'd be happy to join the ranks with your special friends and provide rides to and from wherever you need to be.

    Take care,

My case manager advised me not to do such a long walk, which might leave me too stiff the next morning on surgery day. So if I have time I might come by to say goodby to everybody, but I won't be joining you on the walk. After that, I won't be joining you on a walk for 3-6 months. Thanks for all the love and good wishes.

Hip Replacement Date Friday, June 20

Celebration time! - Today I got the call! I have been waiting in line since February for hip replacement surgery to heal my painful arthritis and get my active lifestyle back. At first I was told my surgery would be in May, or maybe June at the latest. When I hadn't heard about a surgery date by early May, I called my surgeon's office, and the revised schedule was that I wouldn't be scheduled until August - more than 2 months later than I originally expected.

I have been on a "cancellation list", however, and today I was offered to come for the operation to fill a vacancy this Friday, June 20. With great relief and excitement, I said YES!

If all goes as expected, I'll be in the hospital for 3 days, at home on pain killers and anticoagulants for about 2 weeks, off crutches and able to drive my own car again at 6 weeks, becoming more active around 3 months, and fully recovered around 6 months. So my hope is:

    ( ... continued from above ... )

    — Business as usual for me through Thursday, June 19.
    — You probably won’t see or hear from me after that until at least about the second week of July.
    — With rides from friends, I hope to be able to make it to meetings and events starting about July 7 or so.
    — (If you’re one of my special friends who has offered to drive me around, I’ll be contacting you separately.)
    — Starting around the second week of August, I’m hoping to be able to drive myself around, and walk with a cane.
    — Starting in September, I’m hoping to be able to resume short walks and other outdoor activities.
    — By the end of 2014, I hope I’m back to my old self - hiking, XC skiing, skating, and getting 100% back in shape.

But then, nothing is certain in life, and my mileage may vary from this statistical average best case.

And then, there’s my right hip, whose arthritis has been masked by the medication I’ve been taking for the left one...

    Woo - Hoo!!!

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
