In the summer we normally start this hike at the Snow Valley Ski Club parking lot, but in the winter that lot can be very busy. So this time we'll do the same hike, but using the parking lot for the John Janzen Nature Centre as our starting point instead. For those who are unfamiliar with the area, access to Fort Edmonton Park and the John Janzen Nature Centre is via Fox Drive, to the east of the Whitemud Freeway. Turn south at the traffic light, and follow the road along the river side, under the freeway/Quesnell Bridge, and then turn left into the large parking lot. We will be meeting near the far corner of the parking lot, nearest the John Janzen Nature Centre.
We will start the hike with a circuit around Fort Edmonton, and then proceed up Whitemud Creek to Snow Valley and back. The terrain is mostly flat, with only a few gentle slopes and no stairs - an ideal route for beginning hikers.
This hike will go ahead regardless of the weather, so be sure to dress appropriately, bring water for hydration, a snack for energy, and sturdy outdoor footwear. Winter trails may be icy, so bring grippers for your boots if you have them.
We will meet at 9:45 a.m., and start our hike at 10:00. We should be finished in time for any Saturday afternoon activities you may have planned. For those who are so inclined, some of us may go for coffee or lunch after the hike.
