"The End of Time"

What is time? Here's a film that explores this question.

"Travelling the globe, Mettler explores a dizzying range of perspectives on time: from scientists working with a particle accelerator, who try to examine time by smashing protons together in an immense, twenty-seven-kilometre long concrete structure miles beneath the surface; from Buddhists visiting the tree where Buddha was enlightened ... Oscillating between rumination and trance, Mettler pushes at the limits of our understanding of time, and dissects what we construct on top of it." (from the Metro theatre's website).

Fascinating stuff!

The show's at 7pm, so let's meet at 6:45pm in the lobby of the Metro/Garneau theatre. (Note the references that I just made to...time! :)

I'll be holding a little bouquet of colourful fake flowers so that you can find me.

That was a great conversation and it was good to have all of these differen aspects of the film and time itself! We must have sounded like we were astro-physicists to the casual conversation Remedy-goers who were there last night! I agree with Ali, I really felt like part of that conversation and we just hit the right notes with each of our comments! No moments of uncomfortable silence! Again, this was probably my favorite meetup but only due to the fact that I stuck around to just get in the conversation zone and left with my head spinning with all of the ideas. Thankful for that and the meetup. Thanks to Maria for the pulling together of this group and would love to see more people with more ideas come too!

It was a little structureless but the director explained that was this was intended. JUst thought it could have ended a litle differently or made more of an effort to encompass aspects of the film throughout to tie it together. Love the conversation it strred up afterward though and love seeing things like that and sharig my thoughts with people! Visually it was 4 stars, but thematically and naratively, it scored less.

Knowing what he wanted to do with the piece really helped to put things in perspective, hey?

Well, I'm definitely staying for the discussion next time! I looked forward to it last night but the long week caught up with me. I don't think my snores would've enhanced the conversation any. Sounds like it was lively.

Thanks for coming to the film, even if you couldn't stay afterwards. I hope your friend also enjoyed the movie. I look forward to seeing you at a future meetup, and I'd love to hear your thoughts about the next films!

Sorry I couldn't stay for coffee. I liked this more than Samsara, because the visit to the hadron collider. Very trippy when he merged the graphic (mandalas) as through the viewer was a particle zipping around. I'm going to look for that techno musician from Detroit -- that was the coolest lightshow. Very relaxing. I'd like to see it again on the big screen.

That was an interesting film. Nice to take a break from the usual and introduced time in a way never really thought about.... Was a long week but next time I will have coffee with you guys. Many thanks to Maria for organizing!

I would like to express how much I enjoyed the conversation with everyone and glad to get to know Dylan and Craig.Tonight, it was a good group of people.

I agree. What a great conversation! I'm so glad that everyone was there. It certainly was a special evening.

Seemed like some loosely strung together pretty scenes with some babble about time as an after thought. This one definitely made me feel the passage of time! Not in the same league as something like 'Samsara'.

That's too bad that you weren't a fan. It's interesting that you compare it to Samsara.
We actually made that connection at the post-event coffee chat. We noted that some of the same types of imagery appeared in both films, including a close look at towns that have been wrecked/abandoned and left for nature to take over. We also talked about the role of vocal narration or lack thereof in the two films. I'd like to talk with you more on this subject next time I see you.

Greg, if you stayed for the conversation after the movie you would probably changed your mind, the conversation was great! I know you had to leave but next time.

I truly enjoyed myself. I found the film interesting and it gave us tons to talk about afterwards. From now on, whenever I'm late (as I was this evening--apologies again for that!), I'm just going to say: I'm not late; my particles are just moving slowly today. :D Thanks to everyone who came on out this evening! Great conversation afterwards. :)

Also: the book I mentioned is called "The Time Keeper" by Mitch Albom. It is a really interesting exploration of the concept of time. I haven't finished it, but I've enjoyed what I've read so far.

It was good, very different but was glad to watch it. Gave a valuable and different perspective on time, something easy to take for granted...

"86.5% sure I can make it." Greg, you made me laugh when I read this comment from you! I like your precision in the number, how about 86.6%? haha

    2 · February 5, 2013

Did you forget a question mark Maria or does that mean we no longer have a choice whether we make it or not? 8-|

      February 7, 2013

    • Maria

Oh, of course you have a choice. I was using a not-so-subtle persuasion technique to get Ali to indicate that he's coming, haha!! ;)
