"A Clockwork Orange"

This is one shocking film. A man takes on a controversial treatment because he had engaged in hooliganistic behaviour.

This is one of those films that I've always wanted to see, but never have. And here it is on the big screen. Hurray! Please do join me, everyone.

The show is at 7pm. Let's meet in the lobby of the Metro/Garneau theatre between 6:30pm-6:45. I'll be holding a small bouquet of colourful flowers so that you can recognize me.

Free admission for students with valid ID!!

Maria said it best with classical conditioning!

Some nerdism: The athletic 'male attendant' to Mr.Alexander, the large hulking man in very short shorts is none other than David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in Star Wars. Not the voice though, that was James Earl Jones haha

Clockwork Orange does have some mature themes that it pokes fun at but it's interesting to see how much of the movie is tolerable and intolerable to audiences as times goes by. I mean we're talking about a movie that boldly displays gang rape, breaking and entering with sexual assault, behaviour conditioning (where does the government get or make those movies? Hmmm) and juvenile incarceration like regular occurances for youth in this dystopia. I think for those reasons alone it has never had a faithful remake. Oh and if you're going to read the book, get one with a glossary because it's writer in Nadsat which is a potpourri of slang derived from the Russian language.

Viddy well my droogs! Real horrorshow!

I'm hoping to see this sometime in the future as I tend to watch it every couple of years. It's funny but Clockwork Orange has showed up in various aspects of pop culture and has even been referenced in music videos (Blur) and even the Simpsons!
Anyway, great talking about this and hopefully the next movie I can make it to stimulates this much dialogue. Great to have people to discuss it with! Thanks, Maria:)

Thanks for chatting with me, Craig! I certainly look forward to more discussions in the future, too. This movie definitely has lots to unpack. I appreciate its critique of the justice system, a system that focuses more on incarceration and punishment than actual rehabilitation and assistance with things like finding jobs. Interesting to note that when Alex is being classically conditioned, he's shown videos of Nazis...Nazis also did experiments on prisoners! Very subtle things like that sure add to the black humour and critique the film offers.

Well, that was....interesting. Loved the soundtrack--Beethoven! Rossini! YES! No sure I exactly approve of the way in which the pieces were used in the film, and the types of activity for which they served as a background, but at least I got to hear the pieces played. It's not often one hears the overture to "La Gazza Ladra" in a movie. As always, good discussion afterwards. :)
