High Noon

As part of the "Best of the West" series, the Garneau/Metro theatre is now playing "High Noon."

The description from the Metro's website: "Gary Cooper stars as Will Kane, a marshal who gives up his badge and renounces violence for his new bride Amy (Grace Kelly). But on his wedding day, Will receives word that Frank Miller, a violent criminal he put away, has been released on a technicality and is headed in on the noon train to exact his revenge. Just as Kane is leaving his old life behind to start anew, he has to pick up the gun one last time to protect the people of Hadleyville, even as they turn against him and refuse to help. Controversial in its time, High Noon explores the morals of the west and the lone hero’s sense of duty and honour, while also featuring some of the best roles for women in the genre’s canon."

Sounds like fun, and I love old movies. Care to join me?

Meetup time is at 6:45pm for the 7pm show. Let's meet in the main lobby. I will have a bouquet of fake flowers so that you can spot me. If anyone is interested, we can head out afterwards for coffee and chat about the film. The film is quite short, so it will be finished around 8:30pm, meaning we can still have time for coffee, even though it's a weeknight.

Hope to see you then!!

Hey everyone! Just a quick reminder of our soiree tomorrow evening. Please feel free to bring a friend or three, if you'd like. I'm bringing one, and I'm just waiting to hear back from another. I might even invite one more. :D

6:45pm in the main lobby of the Garneau. I'll be holding flowers. See you then!

I'd love to go to this. My mom took me to it when I was a kid. I have a conflict that night since Steve is making his debut as a mountie in a dress.

It's not too late to run away from such a spectacle, Andy! McCarthyism is pleasant in comparison, haha!!

Saw this tonight...bittersweet story. Man stands for what is right...for the good of the town...and no one steps forward to help him take on the bad guys...outsourcing difficult community work to the few or here, the one while the many sit idly by...see the same story a lot now...50 years later, go figure eh!

Want to come but have a night class for a few more weeks. Enjoy this great allegory for McCarthyism.

Hi Paul. Thanks for your comments, and sorry to hear that you can't make it to this meetup.

Please note that there are other showings of this film, including one this evening. You can still catch this flick on the big screen, if you're interested.

I chose the Thursday showing, as it was the only one that worked for me, but I understand that it won't necessarily work for others.
