The Bicycle Thief (Ladi di biciclette)

"Antonio, an unemployed man will get a job posting bills if he has a bicycle. His wife pawns their sheets to buy one, but it is almost immediately stolen. The man’s desperate search through Rome for the precious bike becomes an odyssey in which he encounters the best and worst of humanity, struggling to survive amidst the city’s postwar confusion. As Pauline Kael has noted, the film is “deceptively simple. . . . Its richnesses and enigmas sneak up on you. . . . This neorealist classic is on just about everybody’s list of the greatest films."

Who wants to join me for this classic? Let's meet at 6:45 pm in the lobby of the Garneau Theatre. I will be holding a small bouquet of flowers so that you can recognize me.

Admission is FREE. In Italian with English subtitles. For more information: http://www.metrocinema.org/film_view/4823/

I was going to give it five stars until I found out that a Fides bicycle does not exist. Fides is Latin/Italian for faith. The Hollywood ending was not to be because Ricci lacked faith. Also, there is a big debate among the bicycle fanatics about whether the Fides bike would have taken 700 cc tires or 27 inch. Even if he had found the bike, probably couldn't get replacement tires.

Joe's got a good point. Europe was still in recovery well into the 50s. Only the U.S. and maybe Canada came out of the war unscathed. It didn't help that Italy was on the losing side as part of the axis.

I sort of got the impression Maria that father & son holding hands was more out of habit. I thought the ending was more about the end of innocence for the son & the father about himself.

A very good portrait of post war Europe. People hear forget that the North American post war boom did not happen in Europe for another generation. When I first went to England in 1983 I remember the big selling point for properties was central heating. Our family home had it by 1965 here.

Is there a place to store my bike so it doesn't get stolen?

Just pulling your leg, Greg. I'm concerned that bike thieves may attend this movie to express their inner selves.

Hey everyone! Just a reminder that we are meeting at 6:45pm for this film. Look for me in the main lobby past the ticket booth and the snack stand. I will have the flowers with me so you can spot me. If you don't meet us in the lobby, look for the group towards the front of the theatre, as this is where we tend to sit. See you tonight!!!

I've only seen it twice, but this is one of my favourite films. Not 100% sure I can make it, but am really going to try.

Hi everyone. Glad you can come out to this film. If you are no longer able to make it, please change your RSVP to "no" so that I know whom to expect. Thanks!

I started to say yes, but I know I have a late appt in the afternoon and I am concerned that it would run me late. I would love to go, will change back to yes if I find out I can get away early!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
