Beasts of the Southern Wild

Note: The start time has changed! Please update your RSVP if you need to.

A fantasy drama film set in the Louisiana bayou, Beasts of he Southern Wild took the Sundance Film Festival by storm with its eccentric, wholly unique vision of ecological apocalypse. Hushpuppy is a six-year-old girl living with her boozing father Wink in a Louisiana shantytown called “The Bathtub,” so named because its location in a valley will cause it to be totally wiped out in the event of a flood. When the rains do in fact come and the town is duly washed away, Hushpuppy and Wink embark on an increasingly bizarre odyssey to restart their lives, and the world itself.

The movie starts at 8:30pm. Let's meet outside the ticket counter at 8:00pm.

OK, if this is for the Meetup, I really enjoyed it! Cool people, great conversation! The movie? 2/5. Doubt I made out half of the dialogue.

Generally, I liked it. I liked the theme of community, and seeing people working together and helping each other in a post-apocalyptic film. I could tell that this small group of people really cared for each other, and that Hush Puppy would be okay, even after her father died. Loved the symbolism in the movie.

Thanks to Nelson for hosting this event. The pre-film coffee/food was entertaining and everyone was friendly. I describe this film as the movie "Precious meets Mad Max beyond hurricane Katrina" with added symbolism. I did not love the movie as much as the Cannes and Sundance reviewers but I do give it full marks for originality and trying to convey multiple themes. This film is about as far from over-priced generic hollywood flicks as you can go but I liked Precious more as a movie about having personal courage to fight to endure a very tough life(one theme developed).

It was great to meet those in attendance. Cheers.

It was different, possibly a film which I will learn to appreciate more although Hush Puppy certainly did grow on you.

This film has numerous awards and many positive reviews for originality so I figure it will be worth seeing as it was fairly low budget but at least it should be unique. Looking forward to meeting some of you in 45 minutes.

Remedy is a Cafe with Indian food that's across 109 street from the theatre. It's on the corner of 87 ave and 109 street. If anyone can make it before the show, join us for a hot drink or food.

Yes, Nelson. This had better be a great film. I'll be leaving much milder weather in Los Angeles, i.e., no snow, no ice, no misery, to join you folks.

I haven't been to an event with your group yet (as I don't go to the downtown theatre). Does it cost $2 to attend a movie with this group, or am I confusing it with another? Thanks...

There is no event/membership fee because the meetup.com fee is being paid through a partnership with another meetup group at this time.
