Holy Motors

Film Description

From dawn to dusk, a few hours in the life of Monsieur Oscar, a shadowy character who journeys from one life to the next. He is, in turn, captain of industry, assassin, beggar, monster, family man... He seems to be playing roles, plunging headlong into each part - but where are the cameras? Monsieur Oscar is alone, accompanied only by Céline, the slender blonde woman behind the wheel of the vast engine that transports him through and around Paris. The language is French with English Subtitles.

If that didn't pique your interest take a look at some reviews:

-Weird, baffling, and the lunatic work of a powerfully ambitious filmmaker, 'Holy Motors' is one of the best films of the year.

-A multitude of pleasures abound if one gives into the insane spell the film casts.

-A glorious, gross, absurd, haunting dream and deconstruction of identity that may enthrall like a symphony

The show starts at 7pm. Let's meet inside past the tickets at 6:30pm. Hope to see you there!

-Nelson

I asked my French friend about the insult "Ectoplasm on wheels" she says "It is a "real" insult in France "Ectoplasme a roulette". It comes from a comic book (Tintin). The Captain Haddock always comes up with the weirdest insults and some stay in the day to day language. .... It is found in this album: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Red_Sea_Sharks"; So there you have it, try to use it while driving, it'll confuse the hell out of them. Unless they are French.

I asked my French-speaking daughter about the insult. She hadn't heard of it, but certainly will use it as a way of coping with downtown Edmonton traffic.

Haha. That's hilarious. Thanks, Greg! My current status update on Facebook currently reads: "Maria is an ectoplasm on wheels." :D

Some other thoughts on the film from another viewer: http://checkingonmysausages.blogspot.ca/2012/10/holy-motors.html . A perfectly bizarre film, loved it ... and of course the company!

What a wonderfully bizarre film! Loved the discussion we had about it afterwards, too.

I like weird. Baffling is even better. Lunatic is pretty much the clincher...but I'll have to wait to RSVP until Sunday or even Monday. I have something else planned (not fun), and I'll try to change it. Don't want to commit then not be able to show up.

Must be a full moon. Or a new one. Or faeries. Car trouble, so may be stuck at home until Tues anyway. AND missed the Hobbit - what a week! But I looked it up, Maria is right, Nelson: a great choice. Love your taste in weird.

Unfortunately I caught the film a few days ago by myself. It is a weird and baffling movie. I look forward to reading your reviews.

Good choice! I was just reading about this one yesterday, and thinking it would be a good one to see. Thanks for organizing this, Nelson!
