A Midsummer Night's Dream (pay-what-you-will night)

The River City Shakespeare Festival is back, and one of the two shows this year is A Midsummer Night's Dream. Who would like to come with me? This is on a Tuesday night, so it's pay-what-you-will. Want to see a show put on outdoors in the warm, late-evening sun? Come along!

There are fairies and wood sprites in this show. This one's a comedy and fantasy combined. I'm including a website with the synopsis, because it's not always easy to summarize Shakespeare. I've also invited my mother to come along! :)

Now, I'm not seeing a time listed on the website. Can anyone find it? I've indicated 7pm, but I'm thinking we'd like to line up as early as possible, considering that this is the pay-what-you-can night, and that can get really busy.

The show is at Hawrelak Park, in the amphitheatre. I'm thinking that we should meet somewhere in the line-up. I'll have a bouquet of artificial flowers, so that you can find me.

In the amphitheatre, there are two seating arrangements: grass and amphitheatre. If you wish to sit on the grass, bring a blanket or something else to sit on. The amphitheatre has benches. I also recommend bringing bug spray, as the bugs will get really nasty at night.

I also suggest bringing CASH for admission. There are also a few concession booths, so you can buy snacks, too. I imagine those are also cash-only.

I hope you can join me!

Enjoy King Lear. I can't make it to that one, unfortunately.

That was a lot of fun. Very funny. Some of the scenes maybe went a bit longer than they needed to towards the end, but very good overall. Loved the little dog. My flowers loved the set. They spied their kinfolk up on the stage there, haha!!

That was hilarious, I think they set the record for a death scene. Another great event Maria, sorry we lost you in the crowd at the end.

      Thanks! :)

Yeah, I wanted to chat with everyone after, but I kind of got swallowed up in the crowd. I hope everyone else got a chance to chat with each other afterwards, even though I missed it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this version of a Midsummers Nights Dream. I can't remembering laughing as much at a play for a long time. I would definitely recommend it. Thank you to Maria for hosting it.

  • Barbara

Darn---just told we have to work late--hope to attend another time, thanks!

    July 9, 2013

    • Maria

Sorry that you can't make it, Barbara. And yes, see you another time. Please also note that there is a meetup for King Lear, also with the River City Shakespeare Festival, next week. Perhaps you might be able to make that?

  • Maria

Hey everyone. Just a last reminder that we're meeting this evening at the Park. A few of the hosts will be there starting around 6:45pm, so whatever time you arrive, keep your eyes open for people holding artificial flowers. If you can't spot us in the line, you can find us in the Amphitheatre.

And if you can't attend for whatever reason, please change your RSVP to "no" (i.e. please don't no-show).

    Thanks, and see you tonight!

    • Greg

Do you think the predicted thunderstorms will hit us?

      July 9, 2013

    • Maria

I have no idea. Ask the wood sprites! :P

      July 9, 2013

  • Cindy M.

Thank you for the notice, this is the first I will be able to attend. Other than bug spray and warm jacket, is there anything I should bring with me?

    July 9, 2013

    • Maria

I can't think of anything, unless you want to bring a cushion to sit on in the Amphitheatre. Glad you can join us tonight.

does anyone know if there is a bus shuttle to hawerlack park?

Sorry to intrude on your conversation as I too am searching for directions to this event. I looked at the public transportation and I will look through your post of "Get thee to the performance." lol like the title.

      1 · July 7, 2013

    • Charmaine

No worries Corinne. These are open conversations. And I agree, the title is a pretty cleaver play on words by the "players" who were involved in re-designing the website. :)

Here is a link to the Freewill Festival:http://freewillshakespeare.com/
I am going to try to arrive at about 6:45 because they seat people with mobility issues before they open the gates. Doubt we will get away with holding 24 seats but we will try. Judy and I will each have a big yellowish orange flower.

    1 · July 7, 2013

    • Maria

Awesome. Thanks, Roy and Judy. No worries about holding 24 seats. I understand that might be rather difficult, haha! ;)

To the rest of the attendees: I'll be at the Park around 6:45pm, too. I'll be in the line, so please find me there. I'll have my colourful bouquet of artificial flowers so that you can find me. I have short hair and glasses, and I carry a dark green/teal purse. Hopefully you are able to find me and co-host Priyanka. :)

      See you all then! :)

Guess what I checked the map and it shows me that when I take public transportation I have to go for a long walk. If anyone has taken this way of transportation how long does the walk take?

    July 7, 2013

    • Maria

I think it's about 15 minutes from the gates to the Amphitheatre.

      July 7, 2013

  • Corinne

For now I'm choosing yes and by the end of Sunday I will cancel if I can't make it.

    July 7, 2013

  • Corinne

I want to go! May not make it so I can't select the yes I'm attending yet! Hopefully this evening I have a more definite yes or no on this choice.

    July 7, 2013

  • Sherri

So want to go to this performance - unfortunately already signed up for another that evening but I am going to pick another date and make sure I go ... can't wait to hear your reviews after you go on Tuesday! ;)

    1 · July 5, 2013

    • Maria

Hi Sherri. Yeah, it's too bad about the overlap in events. At any rate, the show will continue for several weeks yet, and I hope you get a chance to see it.

And for everyone else who is signed up: if you can't attend anymore, please change your RSVP to "no." Thanks! :)

      July 5, 2013

  • Barbara

Glad to find others interested in Shakespeare! I have gone to this festival on my own in previous years. Plan to arrive before 7 PM so will look for the group in line, thanks!!

    1 · July 3, 2013

    • Maria

Glad you can join us, Barbara. I agree that these shows are great. I've always wanted to see this particular play, so I'm very, very excited all around.

      July 3, 2013

  • Patrick

Darn....... I really wanted to see this show but something just came up.

    July 3, 2013

  • Maria

Hi everyone. This is a friendly reminder about RSVPs: if you are no longer able to attend this meetup, please update your RSVP to "no." As an event host, I'd like to know how many people are coming, who is coming, and for how many people to hold seats in the amphitheatre. This is particularly important on busy nights like the pay-what-you-will nights. So if you can't make it, please change your RSVP to "no." Thanks! :)

    • Charmaine

Hey. Just a heads up... I was there on Sunday evening and the line-up had already started forming at around 6:45pm and the box office was already open for business. There were about 300 people in attendance that night, but that number can change rapidly depending on the weather and the night. Attendance tends to pick up pretty quickly, especially towards the end of the season.

      July 2, 2013

    • Maria

Good to know, Charmaine. Thanks for the information. I might be able to arrive at the park a bit before 7, but it depends on my schedule. Thanks for letting us know.

  • Maria

Hey everyone! That's a huge crowd that we have signed up for this event. Excellent!

    Two comments:
    1) I am still looking for a co-host or two for this event. If you are interested in helping me with this, please message me. You can also reply to this note, too.

    2) If you are not able to attend, please update your RSVP. For the hosts, it's always easier to do things like look out for people and hold seats when we know how many people are coming and whom to expect.

Thanks in advance for your help in both these matters.

Hello. Just thought I'd post some more info that might be helpful for the event. Box office accepts cash, debit, Visa, MasterCard and cheques made payable to "Free Will Players". Credit/debit card and cash at Merchandise, cash only for 50/50, Concession and Beer Tent. Box office opens for sales at 7pm (1pm for matinees). Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are the busiest nights, but there's a tonne of space. The Amphitheatre seats 1100 people with space for up to 1600 total if room on the grass is included. But if you want a choice of seats, I suggest getting in line about 1 hr to 45 min before the performance to be at the front of the line. Hope this helps. Got the inside scoop this year since I'm volunteering. :)

Thanks again, Charmaine! This is very good information.

Will someone be saving seats in the amphitheatre, will try to get there asap after work around

    June 20, 2013

    • Maria

Yes, I'll be in line about an hour before showtime, and I'll have everyone meet me in line once they arrive. We can certainly save seats in the amphitheatre once we are inside. I'll make sure that the flowers are visible, so that you can spot us.

      June 20, 2013

  • Maria

Hi everyone! We have quite a few people signed up for this so far. Excellent! Naturally, what this means is that I'd love some help with co-hosting. Would anyone be interested? Hosting duties include welcoming people as they arrive, helping to hold seats, and being awesome. I might also ask you to hold the flowers. Sound good? Oh, and if you have ever wanted to host an event of your own, this would be a great chance to co-host with an experienced organizer. If you have hosted before, you're certainly also welcome to apply. Please post here or message me if you wish to help me host. :)

Sounds lovely, even better if we have a warm night Patricia

    1 · June 16, 2013

    • Maria

Agreed. Watching a play outdoors is always fun, but it will be particularly appropriate for A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is set in the woods. The park will be a lovely backdrop. :) I can't wait.
