TheatreGoers Club Sunday Brunch - September

Greetings Fellow TheatreGoers and Friends!  Hot on the success of our Fort Edmonton Park July Sunday Brunch, we've decided to spend our September Brunch experiencing the fine wonders of the Ukraine.

We're going to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village for one of their special event days, the Harvest of the Past & Harvest Food Festival!

Event description from the website:

"Taking visitors back to Alberta’s agricultural roots, this final event of the Village's summer season recreates an old-fashioned threshing bee complete with vintage farm equipment and grain deliveries to the historic elevator.

The day begins with a pancake breakfast, hosted by the Friends of the Ukrainian Village Society.  Other historical activities include flower and herb drying, feather stripping, making kapusta (sour cabbage), grinding wheat, quilting, and canning of produce from the museum’s heritage gardens. The Harvest Food Festival offers a unique culinary experience for visitors to experience favorite foods from the region."

Tickets:

Available on-site and are $9.00 for adults (18 to 64 years) and $7.00 for seniors (65 and over) including GST.  These prices do not include the pancake breakfast.  The pancake breakfast is an additional $7.00 for adults (no senior prices) and can be purchased on-site next to the Kiosk where the breakfast is served by the "big red barn".  In addition to pancakes, there will also be sausages and eggs.  Breakfast starts at 9am with service ending at 11:30am.  The Harvest Food Festival is similar to Taste of Edmonton where you purchase tickets on-site and exchange them for food at the fare.

For more information on other ticket options, click here.

Location:

25 minutes or 50 km (30 miles) east of Edmonton along Highway 16, just 3 km (1.8 miles) east of Elk Island National Park with access along a four-lane divided highway.  For a map and GPS coordinates, click here.

Transportation:

Since this location is not accessible by bus or LRT and is outside of the City of Edmonton, we are looking for volunteers to provide transportation from various parts of the city for those who do not have access to a vehicle to attend the brunch. If you are willing to volunteer transportation or require transportation, please send an e-mail to Charmaine through the Meet-Up website and indicate where you will be travelling from (i.e. North, South, East, West, Downtown...) so we can coordinate by location as best as possible.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks Charmaine, I tried to put my 2 cents in regarding my culture and the way they lived in this new country coming from the Ukraine. Went back with a few late-comers to the 'sod house' and the Slemko house and chatted with the interpreter and found out it was my uncle's grandparents house and not his parents. The food, well what can I say, after eating the best Ukrainian food for almost 40 yrs, before my Mom passed, it was mediocre at best. Well worth using 1 of my vacation days in order to join you all. Just an idea for now, I went to this place called Em Tee Town by Alder Flats, must be 12-13 yrs ago. We could go horseback riding, tour the 1800s western town and stay for a steak BBQ, all for something like $70. Thoughts???

I'd like to, but I'm a bit tapped out right now after fringing and with curling season coming up. Gotta pay those league fees. However, I took a look at the website (http://www.emtetown.c...) and I think it would be a fun day trip. Perhaps next year for me since the town closes for the season on September 30, 2013.

Steve, you should check this out. They've got a really good breakfast menu (with a Sunday Eggs Benny Special - yummmm.......) so I think it's a great option for a brunch of the month/day trip when the season gets started again next year. Could make the BBQ optional for those who only want to attend the brunch.

Hello Folks. We've got another offer of lifts for up to 3 people travelling from Southeast Edmonton - Bonnie Doon area.

    September 2, 2013

    • Charmaine

Hi Georgette. The person offering this ride has opted not to attend the breakfast and will be arriving at the village between 11am - noon. Would you be OK with this? You would miss the breakfast.

      September 5, 2013

  • Charmaine

Hello. I've received a request for transportation from the Oliver area. Is anyone travelling from or through this area and available to provide a ride? More details on request via e-mail.

  • Charmaine

    Hello again!

Breakfast will be served at location 5 on the map of the village and we will be eating just to the right of location 8. We have 4 picnic tables and a fire pit reserved for us. Signs will be posted on the tables. The reservation is under my name, but you shouldn't need it.

The seating around the pit consists of logs, so if you don't like log seating, but would like to sit around the pit, please bring a chair of your own. I'll pack a few in my trunk, but I won't take them out unless I receive a request at the village (too much to carry on my own...).

I was planning to post a really nice map with the location of the picnic tables and pit that I received from the Assistant Event Organizer today, but I can't figure out how to do it so please check out the on-line map for locations 5 and 8.

    Cheers!

Seriously thinking of joining you all for this event, except as we can't eat the breakfast we likely will be coming a bit later in the morning ... I am sure we shall find you if we wander around long enough ha ha, I love the Village and haven't been for a couple years and even better to see it with this crew. :) Cheers ... Sherri and Kevin

Hi Charmaine, thanks for letting us know ... not sure if I want to cart all that to the park - for we will have to likely bring something for lunch as well, but for sure will let you know before the event. Do not have to wait for us ~ if we decide to join you we shall find you! ;)

    • Charmaine

      Hi Sherri. Sounds good. :-)

I'll be there closer to 10, when the park opens. Don't worry about waiting for us, we'll bump into everyone at some point.

OK Anne. Thanks for letting us know.

I'll have breaky, too, but bring on the pyrohy and kubasa!!! Bring some cash as they have artisans and a farmers market with canning of jams, pickles, etc.. And did I mention they should have that Ukrainian delicacy- kettle corn!

    Hello again fellow VillageGoers!

We'll be meeting at 8:45am over by the "Big Red Barn" (aka Food Services) at the end of the parking lot. Look for location 5 or 7 on the map of the village posted on-line on the main website - link in the event description. An early start time means more time to enjoy the park!

Admission booths open at 8:30am. Breakfast starts at 9am with service concluding at 11:30am. The rest of the park opens at 10am and closes at 5pm. We'll be eating in the picnic area behind the barn.

As a courtesy to the hosts and the other members of our group, please let us know by posting here whether you plan to arrive later. This will ensure that we are not waiting at the barn for latecomers and can head over for breakfast in a timely manner.

    Thanks and see you soon.

Thanks to everyone who has generously offered to provide rides to anyone who requires transportation. So far, I have not received any requests for a ride.

If you require transportation, please contact me ASAP so I can put you in contact with someone willing to provide a ride. Alternatively, if you are comfortable, feel free to post a reply directly to anyone offering a ride on this page.

Looks like we're going to have a good turn out at this brunch! :)

Hi Charmaine, I live close to your area. Do you still have a spot open for a ride? Thanks.

      September 3, 2013

    • Charmaine

Hi Alex. Can you please clarify for me where you will be travelling from? Please send your reply via personal message to me rather than posting here. Thanks.

      September 3, 2013

  • Heather

I am coming from St.Albert and can take 5 comfortably.

    1 · September 3, 2013

  • john k.

OK, it's kinda silly to take 20+ vehicles out there with 28-30 people going(I am coming from Stony and can make a pit stop somewhere near the Yellowhead). I can take 2, plus there's a bonus if you ride with me- you can listen to some Ukrainian music(polkas, schottises, waltzes and even the butterfly) on a cassette stereo I'll have in my back seat. You'll be dancin' in your seat listening to the stuff. $4 to carpool. Steve, I can pick you up from the Belvedere LRT station.

I can take 1 more with me. I'm downtown also.

We also have an offer of a lift for up for 2 people travelling from Stony/Spruce or in Edmonton, just off the Yellowhead.

    August 25, 2013

  • Sherri

question ... is the time you want to be there 9 am or is this the time you want to be leaving the city? Depending on what side of the city you live on it takes approximately 35-55 mins to drive out to the location.

    August 24, 2013

    • Charmaine

Hi Sherri. I'll get back to you on this after the Fringe. I have to check when the park opens to purchase admittance tickets.

File this 1 under the 'believe it or not' file. The 1st time I went to the Ukr. Vill., Mulroney was campaigning to be PM in '84. The 2nd time I was there was 20 yrs later. Elle from the Foodies is thinking about doing a Foodie Meetup here as well. Love to be able to spread my heritage between both groups. Now, Ed Stelmach's homestead is part of the village. He was the 1st Ukrainian premier to be elected in AB. and I went on the same school bus as he did. As this is 1 of their popular special events of the yr, it wouldn't be a bad idea to be there at 9. And if time permits, we can go for a stroll at Elk Island NP.
