Come listen to some more good jazz at the Yardbird!

Kodi Hutchinson – bass
Chris Andrew – piano
Karl Schwonik – drums
Curtis Macdonald - saxophone

The Hutchinson Andrew Trio is a unique voice on the Canadian Jazz scene. Over the past eight years, this acoustic piano-based trio has been bringing their own Western Canadian sound, mixing contemporary swing, Latin, and acoustic groove, to the Canadian jazz landscape. Comprised of bassist Kodi Hutchinson, CBC Galaxie Rising Star pianist Chris Andrew, and Canadian jazz star Karl Schwonik on drums, the trio is a two-time Western Canadian Music Awards nominee for Outstanding Jazz Recording. The trio was awarded the TD Grand Jazz Award at the 2013 Festival International de Jazz de Montreal. In addition, they are profiled in the November, 2013, issue of Downbeat magazine.

Their third album ‘Prairie Modern’ consists of 13 original tracks that are a reflection of the vast array of musical and personal influences growing up in Canada’s Prairies. Featuring special guests Grammy-nominated saxophonist Donny McCaslin and percussion master Rogério Boccato, ‘Prairie Modern’ represents the harmony, beauty, energy and excitement of the modern Canadian West.

Joining the Hutchinson Andrew Trio as a special guest for this evening will be Calgary-born saxophonist Curtis Macdonald. Based in Brooklyn for several years, in 2011, he released “Community Immunity” on Dave Douglas’ Greenleaf Music record label. His current CD is “Twice Through the Wall”. In addition to his performance accolades, Curtis’ sound-art work is receiving international acclaim including his latest artistic collaboration which was a commission to compose an original score for modern dance company Aszure Barton & Artists.

His sound is original, fresh and organic, embracing a sense of ease that engages listeners in a state of deep listening. “The exchanges I have with musicians, choreographers, filmmakers, sculptors, engineers, mathematicians and digital artists whom I’ve met over the years continually influence the music I produce.”

“…a fearless artist who is willing to break free of the shackles of expectations.”

First time for jazz at the Yardbird Suite last night...very chill, in a non-wintery way. Posse tonight was pretty jokey...NZ silly! Thanks Dianne for herding we jazzy kittens :-)

Well, I was there but I didn't see any sunflower or sign or indication of who the group was or where they were sitting. Too bad. The show was awesome though. So at least I got to hear some amazing jazz. Maybe next time I'll get to meet some of you.
