I’m a writer, educator and entrepreneur who fosters creative expression through innovative after school programs for grades 4-8. I’m also a husband, supporting my wife’s new immigration law practice, losing weight, and reading as much as possible.
I founded Think Now Education and launched the Game Smart Video Game Writing Academy at the Inglewood Unified School District’s after school program. Game Smart offered a creative outlet for a group of kids smack in the middle of a generation suffering from cuts to the arts, and the opportunity to be creative after school was like water to the parched. The kids poured their ideas onto storyboards, games and animations. It was inspiring. Building on the success of Game Smart,, I developed the Newshounds Journalism Club, a common core aligned language arts writing program that gives students the opportunity to write stories they care about for an authentic audience that cares about them. In 2011, our first year, they wrote dozens of blog posts, and enough stories to fill a 155 page book: the Newshounds’ Annual. It’s stocked in school libraries around Inglewood, giving the students who contributed to it a chance to point to their work and say “I’m an author.”
Excellent group. I'm looking forward to the next meetup, and keeping in touch with the entrepreneurs and educators I met in this one.
