Effective Altruism Dinner Discussion

  • May 4, 2013 · 5:00 PM
  • Winterfell House

Want to help improve the world? Over the past few years, a movement has taken shape of people who apply rationality and critical thinking towards the subject of altruism. Whether you're looking to embark on project of your own, volunteer or donate money, it can be helpful to meet other people who share an interest in making their help as effective as possible.

Come to warm, potluck dinner of fellow altruists. This month, we'll be focusing on sharing our personal stories and interests, and talking a bit about what some of us have learned about personal effectiveness.

Spring is finally here, so bring your bring your favorite barbecue dish to share!

Had a really great discussion! Group broke up into different conversations, one addressing the basics of the EA movement and the other discussing career directions, startup possibilities, and how to deal with the "replaceability" issue - finding areas that are high impact but under-invested in, such that your own efforts contribute something new rather than displacing another worker.

Food was pretty great too! Thanks to everyone who brought stuff!

(a fair number of attendees are likely to be vegetarian. I myself will probably be bringing ethically sourced hamburger. )

There will be a grill on site, and you can either bring raw food to cook or something you've already prepared. Let us know what you're bring so people can bring a nice variety!

I understand there will be a barbeque on site, and I am to bring raw food to cook? Or do you mean that I am to bring food that has alreadsy been barbecued?
