Are you motivated to do something that makes the world a better place? Do you want to have the biggest impact you possibly can? We each have limited resources with which to affect the world. Figuring out how to invest these resources to accomplish the most good can be difficult, involving a lot of research and strategy. Fortunately, we don't have to do it alone.
Effective Altruism is a growing movement of people looking to maximize their impact on the world. We take our moral obligations toward others seriously and look for ways to do good for others that wouldn't otherwise be done. Whether you consider yourself a dedicated effective altruist, are curious about the economic and philosophical ideas behind the movement, or just want to do a little more good when you can, we're excited for you to join us!
EA-NYC has been meeting since 2014 to discuss these topics and build and reinforce the local EA community; as of 2018 we've grown to more than 1000 members across Meetup and Facebook and have been featured in the Wall Street Journal.

What are the most concerning issues around climate change? How can we effectively take action?
Join this month's discussion group meeting and bring your thoughts and ideas surrounding climate change risks and effective interventions (including topics like mitigation, adaptation, air pollution, policy interventions, food interventions, and geoengineering)! We welcome *EVERYONE* to bring their perspectives on the topic as well as any prompts/questions you might have for others.
This month, we're especially excited to be meeting in-person! We hope you'll join us for this unofficial Earth Day event!
We also strongly encourage anyone interested in attending to read a few introductory materials we've prepared (30 minutes of core content with additional optional content available) before the discussion.
The goal of the readings is simply to ground the conversation so that participants can make the most of the event - but if you feel that you already have some background in the topic(s) (or if you simply want to join anyway), we would love for you to join the event! You can find our compilation of resources on the topics below:

Please use this link to officially sign up - you will not receive registration details unless you fill out this quick Airtable form - https://bit.ly/43qnO5i
(Please continue to check for updates regarding date, schedule, weather changes, and preparation. Date of hike will likely only be confirmed a few days before the proposed date. Sunday, 4/21 is the first rain date if Saturday doesn't work.)
Grab some fresh air, and (re-)meet some considerate NYers! Join for a laid-back hike and discussion in Upstate New York.
EA NYC Volunteer Organizer Jacob will be leading the hike. Please see below for some (critical!) travel / meal planning and coordination.
The exact trail is still yet to be determined, but the group usually goes at leisurely pace so that most trails are manageable for the attendees.
The exact timetable details may change, but this will be similar to the final itinerary:
8:25 am: meet Jacob in NYC at either Grand Central or Port Authority (to be determined). You can reach him on FB Messenger or at jacob.eliosoff@gmail.com
8:50 am: Train/Bus departs the terminal/station.
~10:15 am: arrival in the town of the trail and walk to the trailhead
~10:45 am: hike begins
1 pm-ish: at some point along the route there will be a break to eat a packed lunch
~3:45: walk back to train/bus
4:20: take the train/bus back to NYC
5:55: arrival back in NYCStuff to bring:
COMFORTABLE SHOES - good traction, ideally some ankle support
LUNCH, SNACKS, WATER - no restaurants/stores in the park, though don't overburden yourself either
A hat?
A mask, if you like: most of the event is outside and relatively covid-safe, but we will spend 2+ hours on the bus
The train may be around $15.25 each way = $30.50. Full-time nonprofit workers/students are eligible for an EA NYC discount, just ask
Tick protection (ie. long pants tucked into your socks and/or repellant).
Ticks can be active any time it is above freezing. Also consider closely inspecting yourself when you get home: the risk with ticks comes if you don't notice one for days. Please register here to attend (required) - https://bit.ly/43qnO5i

- Orienting Toward a High-Impact Career: Q&A and Discussion ft. Vaidehi AgarwallaTBA Manhattan, New York, NY
Discuss impactful career planning with fellow community members! Special guest Vaidehi Agarwalla will help frame the conversation based on her experiences working at EA and non-EA organizations and helping to troubleshoot the EA talent ecosystem.
Vaidehi will give a quick overview of some common failure modes in the EA careers landscape and is happy to answer additional questions before/throughout the group discussion. If you'd like to (optionally) prepare before the event, check out this post from Vaidehi!
Weather permitting, this event will also take place outside! We'll provide picnic blankets and plant-based snacks to help make the most of the discussion.
Guests are welcome to bring additional vegan snacks/dishes at their discretion - though, we adhere to a strictly vegan food policy at all of our events! (If you're not sure if something is vegan, please don't feel obligated to find anything - we will have more than enough tasty snacks for everyone!)****
Vaidehi is a Sr. Product Manager at Momentum, a platform that helps donors fund and connect with nonprofits. In her free time, Vaidehi also thinks about how to get money and talent directed towards important and neglected projects; toward that end, she founded Pineapple Ops to help provide career infrastructure for people working in biosecurity, operations, and more.
Vaidehi has been involved in the effective altruism community since 2018 with a focus on careers advice and infrastructure. She has a background in marketing, operations, and recruiting, has worked with a boutique consulting firm, and has interned with Charity Entrepreneurship. Vaidehi is originally from Singapore and studied sociology and statistics at Haverford College.
