Discussion of books and ideas about 18th century Europe. Stuffy and ribald, learned and angry, egocentric and revolutionary, English, French, Italian, German, Russian, Swedish, aristocrats, playwrights, street people, and politicians created societies as colorful as their art. Obsessed with Rome and Greece, sexually wild, questioning religion, fighting about science, Parisians, Londoners, Scots, Austrians, and traveling Americans, conspired and fought to create a truly memorable and fascinating era. There's plenty to read and talk about from what they've left us. Emphasis England and France, mostly non-fiction, mixed with fiction. I'm not a great organizer or conductor of meetings, so I'd be happy to have some help.
Several years ago, I constructed a web page that has a lot of information about Thomas Jefferson's stay, with his daughter, in Paris from 1784 to 1789. You might find this site of interest. Go to: jeffersoninparis.com.

I had doubts about posting the following video, but perhaps it reflects the modern English idea of their 18th Century ancestors. A little humor is not a bad thing; the 18th Century had a lot of ribald humor.
