San Diego Kilowatt Hour: 3rd Saturday Ride

Let's keep the momentum going on these Saturday rides. Michael suggested a Mission Bay to Rose Canyon and down to LaJolla Shores ride. We'll meet at 10am and ride at 10:30am at De Anza Cove Park off Mission Bay Drive. There's plenty of free parking. We'll then connect with Sante Fe Street and ride it until we connect with the Rose Canyon bike path. We'll take the bike path into La Jolla and make our way down to the shores. Once at the shores we'll find a place for lunch, check out the wildlife, and coast south along the coast until we make it back to Mission Bay and De Anza Cove. If you have a suggestion for lunch, post it in the comments so I can add it to the route. Speaking of the route, I think I've figured out how to make the bicycle map. I'll work on that and post it when it's done. This will give everyone an idea of where we'll be riding and the distance we'll be traveling.

Will Alan from Coronado Bikes be there? Are any retailers bringing bikes to rent for new-e-bikers?

    June 14, 2013

    • Matthew P.

I don't see him in the RSVP so I would guess no. If you wanted to call around to drum up retailers, that would be awesome.

hmmm 20 miles ride from De Anza Cove park.... all around la jolla. according to my calculations I wont have enough charge to get through the ride. my bike only got 49 miles tested range with my 2 battery packs. My total ride will be 64 miles and I'm a good 15 miles short =( I guess I'll pass on this ride this time.

Hi guys! Saturday the 15th is almost upon us. I've mapped out a suggested ride and added a food stop for us in the middle. We'll meet in De Anza Cove Park at 10:00am and start the ride at 10:30am.

The restaurant we will be stopping at is http://marketplacegrille.com/. There's about four other restaurant choices right in this same little alcove as well as a convenience store if you just want snacks and drinks.

The ride as is stands calculates out at 20.9 miles according to Google maps. The good news is that a few miles after our warm up is the biggest hill of the ride. The hill is up Gillman to the college and into La Jolla. That's probably where we'll use the majority of our juice. After that hill, it's a slow leisurely down hill or flat grade all the way back to De Anza cove. Take a look at the map and get your bikes charged up!

Hi John from Illinois. We really haven't had a ride yet that needed two packs and two chargers. We usually drive to the meetup spot, checkout everyone's rides, and then take a tour within the limits of production ebikes. My bike has a 36v 12ah LiFePo4 and I was the only one who ran out of charge on our last 26 mile ride. I was trying to drain my battery to push the limits and see how far my DIY bike would make it. I ran the last 15 miles pretty much wide open. This is a social group to checkout the technology. With the cost of batteries and chargers being the most expensive part of the bike I'm not sure many of our members would want to double down on that expense. Thanks for your input!

Hey guys, are we meeting in the parking lot at de Anza cove right next to the pedestrian bridge? There are two parking lots side by side.Or,are we meeting on the west side by camp land by the bay?Is the address 2702 N.Mission Bay Dr. Exactly where we meet? I have loaded the above address in my phone for Saturday. Thanks for any info.Steve W.

    June 12, 2013

    • Matthew P.

I was planning on the second lot nearest to the bridge. I usually get there a few minutes early and ride around to see if I can find anyone. See you there!

Do you folks seek out routes with charging opportunities?
How far and how long is a typical ride?
I am here in northern Illinois, and I have good weather & good trails, but an extreme lack of fellow e-bikers to ride with. I would like to showcase the range, practicality & fun of e-biking with a group ride in this area, but I don't want to scare any potential riders away by saying that we will ride a 50-mile round trip.
When winter comes here in a few months I hope to get to the west coast, staying in Long Beach, most likely. Maybe we could schedule a meetup between San Diego & Long Beach at a location with overnight accommodations, good food and known charging opportunities in useful directions & locations.
Anyone coming to the Chicago or Milwaukee areas should get in touch with me. I have several e-bikes suitable for 150lb, 5'2" riders, and I can cannibalize parts (hub motors) to assemble bikes for folks to ride with me or for sale or lease.

Most of the riders in this club when I first attend the group ride last time is that they load their bikes in their cars and drive to the meeting area. you should consider the battery capacity of most ebikes out there. The common capacity is about 10ah which is good for 15 miles in variable terrain. so to be safe, make the rides a 10 mile route max so no one could ran out of juice before you reach where you parked your cars. It's going to take about 6 to 8 hours to fully charge batteries so having to charge at a waypoint is not practical unless you have a fast charger that can charge your battery to 80% in an hour. but most people don't have those though. The best way to determine the itinerary is to talk it over with your group mates and make a decision on what every body can do. ;)

    • Rhonda Weber M.

I agree with Hemdan. Most of our rides are 15-20 miles. In our group, there is a small percentage of custom ebike conversions. Most of the ebikes are factory bikes. We usually meet, check out bikes, rode, and find a place to stop and get some breakfast or lunch. My husband and I are going to Iowa the end of the month and possibly making a trip into Chicago for a day or so. If that happens maybe we can meet up for a ride.
