Outing to the "Peace on Earth Film Festival"

Join us on Friday, March 8th for our fourth year at the Peace on Earth Film Festival. The festival is FREE to the public.

The Peace on Earth Film Festival has not announced the times for the event as of yet. It appears however the feature films start at 6:00 pm. We will meet by 5:30 pm to ensure good seating. As this is a free event it is first come - first served.

This year the Friday Night theme is all about the Latino community and the equality of all people. The movies being shown have been described as "amazing" by one of the people on the selection committee. As I get more information on the films selected I will post it.

Here is the Schedule:

6:00 - 6:10 - Opening comments

6:11 - 7:36 - "The Second Cooler":

The Second Cooler (USA, 87 min)

Directed by Ellin Jimmerson

The Second Cooler is a migrant justice documentary for English and Spanish speaking audiences which unravels why twelve million Latin American migrants are in the U. S. illegally and brings major implications into focus.

Trailer at:

7:38 - 8:00 - Q&A "The Second Cooler"

8:01-8:13 - Break

8:40 - 8:34 - "Historias":

Historias (USA, 20 min)

Directed by Gloriana Fonseca-Malavasi

Legend becomes reality in this story about a teenager who tries to reject his identity. Manuel is tired of his grandmother’s fanciful stories from the old country and of being the only poor kid at an upper-class school. He wishes he were more like his classmates until, one night, he hears the cry of the Weeping Woman.

8:35 - 10:20 - "180 Grados":

180 Grados (Mexico, 105 min)

Directed by Fernando Kalife

Salvador Diaz is a skilled conman. For most of his years, he cheated others for a living... until he cheated the wrong man. After messing with Martin Soto, Salvador's life now lies in the hands (or rather, the knee) of Gasparotto, an injured sports star who's flawlessness in the playing field becomes the most important factor not only for 'bringing in the big bucks', but for claiming his life back. Getting the people to believe in Gasparotto is Salvador's greatest act of con artistry yet. It will be in this moment of his life where he finally meets his true destiny. That is, if he can still believe in something higher than just himself.

Trailer is at:

10:21 - 10:41 - Q&A 180 Grados

10:42-10:47 - Closing comments

From their website:

"2013 marks the fifth annual POEFF, which is one of the few festivals in the world whose mission is to showcase films on peace, nonviolence, social justice and an eco-balanced world. Located in Chicago, with an eclectic community that appreciates and celebrates film, we have also developed an extensive, year-round cultural and educational outreach program that uses the festival's films (with filmmaker approval) and attendant programming, to expand the peace dialogue in every neighborhood of Chicago and beyond.

Filmmaker-focused, the POEFF aims to warmly welcome all exhibiting filmmakers to Chicago, provide discounted accommodations in area hotels within walking distance to the Chicago Cultural Center - the historic landmark venue for the POEFF, located in the heart of Chicago's celebrated theatre district, and directly across the street from the world-renowned Millennium Park, and walking distance to the famed shops along the "Magnificent Mile"."

Mission Statement

...raising awareness of peace, nonviolence, social justice and an eco-balanced world

Peace On Earth Film Festival (POEFF) is a not-for-profit festival established to celebrate and encourage the work of independent filmmakers from around the world on the themes of peace, nonviolence, social justice and eco-balance. POEFF aims to contribute to a culture of peace through international cinema, dialogue and programming highlighting individuals on the vanguard of peace activism and social change. POEFF endeavors to enlighten and empower individuals, families, and communities to step out of the ignorance of conflict, violence and divisiveness, into the light of communication, consideration, tolerance and understanding.

The Second Cooler was a powerful indicator of how badly the United States needs to reconsider NAFTA and what it does to small farmers in all three countries. Historias was a modern day telling of a very old tradition. Thank you for showing us that stories have a way to making themselves felt in the 21st Century!

Dinner afterward was a lot of fun as well!

What an amazing evening. I think "The Second Cooler" really affected several of us. Sparked some awesome conversation and was a definite eye opener. The second film "Historias" was a wonderful lift up after "The Second Cooler". Very well acted and filmed and a great story. What a powerful evening. Thank you to all who were there.
