"The Degree and Acceptance of Drug Use in Religious Scriptures and Practices"

This discussion, being held at Northwestern University will feature Marty Couch as a speaker giving a perspective on Wicca. I have been asked to give a 15-20 minute talk on Drug Use as part of the Wiccan Religion then will be part of a panel discussion.

The event is being organized by the Chaplain's Office and there decision to include Wicca in the religions represented is very exiting.

This event is open to the public.

From their e-mail to me:

"The panel is taking place on Wednesday, February 20th at 8pm in the Lake Room (2nd Floor, Room 203 of Norris University Center). If possible, please arrive by 7:45pm to set up. We have also allotted time for a short Q&A for the audience after all panelists have presented.

The directions from the Davis Stop to the Norris University Center are best explained on Google Maps. Here is the link: http://goo.gl/maps/Csw0h

Norris is on the east side of campus right next to Lake Michigan.

Once they arrive at Norris, take the elevator to the second floor, make a left to the end of the hallway, then a right all the way down to the LAKE ROOM (Room #203).

As for the content we would like to discuss, we hope to simply answer the question- what is your religion's perspective on drug use, abuse, and policy? You have a lot of freedom on what you would like to talk about, but here are some guidelines for each religion (not restricted to these questions):
What does the religious texts and history say about drug use, abuse, and policy?
Is drug use incorporated into practice? How?
What are avenues for treatment through your religious organization?
You do not have to represent your religion as a whole. You can express your personal beliefs as well.

We will require a ~15 minute presentation from each panelist (this can be done with a PowerPoint or just orally). If you would like to make a short handout for the attendees, please reply to this email with it attached, and I can have them printed, copied, and ready for the night of the event.

As a few of you have expressed concern about this, I would like to reiterate that SSDP does NOT have any expectations for your religion's acceptance of drugs. If the religion you are representing is not tolerant of drug use, then please express that- we are welcoming of the truth.

Your fellow panelists are recipients in this e-mail. Here is the list of confirmed panelists:

Father John Kartje (Sheil Catholic Center)
Reverend Julie Windsor Mitchell (University Christian Ministry- Protestant)
Levi Mele (President- LDSSA)
Northwestern Professor Yakir Englander (Judaism)
Northwestern Professor George Bond (Buddhism)
Marty Couch (Center of the Elemental Spirit- A Congregational Wiccan Community)

Please feel free to contact each other to plan out any details (especially if you are representing a denomination of Christianity as we have 3 panelists from that background).

If you have any questions/concerns, please e-mail me (or one of my co-hosts- they are CC'd). In case you need to get in contact with me on the day of the event, my cell phone number is [masked]-4638.

And most importantly, here is the link to the Facebook event-https://www.facebook.com/events/489575521105836/489788441084544/?notif_t=plan_mall_activity
If you have an account, please RSVP and invite students in your organizations.

We have also began creating promotional material for the event. Our first flier is attached. SSDP's PR team is creating more fliers and a promotional e-mail for you to forward to students, faculty, and members of your organizations. We will be sending that to you over the weekend.

Thank you again for your participation in the panel. I look forward to meeting you on Wednesday."

Looks like an exciting evening. I'm looking forward to seeing some familiar faces in the crowd.

Ok everyone. I have been asked to speak on this topic but would like to include as many of our community's voices as I can. Send me a private message with your personal thoughts, practices, and whatever else comes to mind on the topic of "The degree of acceptance of drug use in religious scripture and practice". I know we have no actual religious scripture except what the earth tells us so try to ignore the wording and speak to the message. Thank you all.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
