1st Ember.js Detroit Meetup - Meet & Greet (and build a Twitter app!)

Emberists and future-Emberists from South-eastern Michigan unite! Grab your laptops and head on out to Northville!

We're kicking off an amazing Ember-filled 2014 with our first meetup. The event is still a little TBD, (as is the general format) as we'd like to take a community-driven/organic approach - keep what's working and change what isn't, and incorporate the community's feedback.

As we firm up all the event details, we'll make sure to keep this updated.

The first meetup will start off with some time to chat with fellow Emberists/JavaScripters/coders/members/larpers. Food and drinks will be provided by our sponsor Digital Roots. After everyone has had enough to eat and have worn out talking about the latest memes, we'll dive into a discussion/workshop and get to learnin'!

A little back-story on what we're hoping to do here as a group. The hope is to host meetings frequently enough that everyone feels like they're a part of building this community. Rather than feel like you're attending, we want you to feel like you're a part of something. This is your chance to learn from others, teach others, ask your questions, and stay informed on exciting things! And, we're all a part of that. Additionally, the goal is make sure everyone feels like they're engaged in the discussion by encouraging a workshop format. Rather than sit still for an hour, half-listening, half-reading-reddit, let's all DO something. So, again, bring your laptops.

Even if you're not a coder, you're invited! One of the ideas we are tossing around is hosting more goal-oriented meetups where we actually try to accomplish something large over the course of many weeks. This could be interesting to graphic artists, web designers, entrepreneurs, etc. This is still waaaay TBD, but hopefully we can get enough interest soon that we go for it.

More details to come, but we're really looking forward to hanging out with the Ember-crowd from the area!

Yeah, thanks for coming everyone! And thanks to those who tried or who joined but couldn't make it.

We'll be scheduling the next meetup here shortly and hopefully open some discussion on the direction we should take. Most likely a deeper dive into ember, covering some of the things we didn't have time to cover, and possibly going further with the concepts we covered this time.

I missed most of the fun too. Not an easy place to find. Hope we can partake more next time.

Great first meeting - lots of people and everyone seemed to be both pleased about the meetup and enthusiastic about learning Ember.js

1 more day! Excitement is building... almost as much excitement as building an app!

Regrets that I will have to leave at about 6:30 in order to be downtown Detroit 7:30 for prearranged concert. At least I might get a chance to meet some folks.

    Hey everyone,

Based on the poll, we decided to have our first meetup - which is nearly a week away! - be a meet and greet, with food and beverage, and then a short(ish) workshop where we build an app that loads data from a public web service (the Twitter API!)

We think this will cover enough of the basics for you newbies out there, and hopefully be interesting enough for the advanced users.

See you all soon! Don't forget to bring your laptop!

Make sure to vote in the poll so we can gauge the topic for the first meetup: http://www.meetup.com/Ember-Detroit/polls/990952/
