Beginner Talk

By Steve Davie

Steve is a Software Engineer at Switchfly, a software-as-a-service company with a focus in travel related services. Prior to joining Switchfly, Steve was an engineer at Yammer, a globally recognized leader in enterprise social networking.

Although Steve has has broad experience throughout his career as an engineer, he is most passionate about JavaScript; he has been advocating its mainstream adoption long before its increase in popularity. Steve is also a designer and developer of applications, video-games, and even video-production.

Steve's talk, "From Prototype To Ember.js", will describe the pains and gains in moving from a legacy unstructured DOM query/ajax library to a well-structured and heavily opinionated framework.

Advanced Talk

by Tomhuda

Tom Dale and Yehuda Katz are members of the Ember core team, and very serious gentlemen :p If you've been to a past meetup you've likely heard from one or both. We promise they're still just as entertaining.

Tom and Yehuda will be on hand to talk about the recent updates and upgrades to Ember Data.

Oh no... Just missed the RSVP time. Is it possible to streaming the meetup? :D

We wish we could! Unfortunately, the Meetup is 100% donation based, from the food, to the venues, to the speaker's time. Point being, there aren't any funds for video recording. We've been able to do it a time or two in the past, when the particular sponsor donating the venue had the means/equipment for it, but otherwise not. Hope this can change in the future!

I've tried RSVP to the openings fives times. This is getting crazy. I guess there is high demand due to lack of example and good tutorials. Hope they decide to video the event.

The system's been a bit irritating this time around—which means we've had lots of people changing their minds/schedules last minute. Unfortunately, it's somewhat default behavior, and the alternatives aren't better at this point. That said... we're doing our best and it should get better as time goes on. Just trying to manage with growing demand :p

Why are there emails to 'act quickly' because a space opened up? Isn't that the point of a waiting list?

    1 · August 23, 2013

    • Chris V.

Leah: Please change to "First-come, first-served" for waiting list. Who camps on their inbox?

      August 23, 2013

    • Leah S.

Hi Chris—Unfortunately, this *is* the Meetup version of first-come, first-serve. When a spot opens up, it emails everyone on the waitlist to add themselves. In the past, when it automatically added people, almost none of the people added automatically closer to the event showed up. They either changed their plans by then and didn't bother to opt-out, or never noticed the were added, and the spots stayed empty. This way, at least it's likely that *someone* will fill the spot, though you're right that's it's basically whoever notices the email first. I know it's not ideal, but we're working with the best we've got, apologies!

Sad that I have to wait a full month for the next meetup, but excited to see what's in store nonetheless! :)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
