4601 Connecticut Ave. NW, Washington, DC
Join us for inspirational evening program we are calling Hope for Kenya: A Night of Stories, Song, and Wine with singing artist Doris Mayoli! We are hosting Doris Mayoli for her DC stop as she tours the U.S. to raise awareness regarding the fight against cancer in Kenya! Doris will share her personal story, talking about how music carried took her through her journey battling cancer, share the stories of other Kenyan survivers, and sing the songs that made a difference and inspired her to start Twakutukuza Trust. To complement the African theme, we will have some Kenyan munchies, and a South African wine-tasting session from our very own "Zin Diva." It will be a powerful, inspiring evening on behalf of a great cause. Public is invited! If you are so moved at the end of the evening, donations can be given to Doris' non-profit.
Doris Mayoli is the Excutive Director of the Twakutkuza Trust which provides medical, emotional, and spiritual support for victims of cancer in Kenya (especially women and children). The Trust also raises awareness of the needs that exist in providing care in Kenya (the photo above is of the Trust's Choir annual concert fundraiser). Besides raising awareness, the Doris and the Trust also enlist new volunteers to help in this vital cause. The needs are acute in Kenya where there are few specialists in this area. Women and children in rural areas face an uphill battle to gain access to cancer treatments in urban areas. If you would like to join Doris' cause on a long-term basis or share her cause with your circle or church, there will be additional hand-outs and sign-up sheets.
More about our speaker: Doris Mayoli battled cancer six years ago and, with the financial help and emotional support of friends, emerged victorious. Deeply grateful that she had survived, she wondered how she could help other cancer victims. In 2010 she created the Twakutukuza Trust, and she has been talking about her story of hope, faith, and music to audiences ever since as she raises funds and awareness about cancer in Kenya.
Wine-tasting Details: Helping us enjoy some wines from South Africa will be our very own Beth Taylor, the “Zin Diva.” Beth is a certified specialist of wine and level 1 sommelier. She shares her passion for food and wine through tastings, vineyard visits, and entertaining on her blog,www.zindiva.com or twitter feed @Zin_Diva. She’s hosted educational wine tastings for the Norfolk Jaycees and other non-profit groups.
How to help with Food: We need wine-tasting foods for our dinner, including cheeses, appetizers, sliced meats, etc. Please list your food item in your RSVP comments if you want to help in some way.
Donations accepted to support the work of the Trust: As groups host Doris on her traveling tour, they are taking up donations for the Twakutkuza Trust and its wonderful work on behalf of cancer victims. All of the expenses of the evening will be donated so we can focus on helping Doris help others.
Hope you can make this exciting evening!
