Identity Theft: A Discussion by the New York County District Attorney’s Office –

Last month we had a very well attended presentation on seniors and technology from Senior Planet. One of the points discussed was the disproportionate low representation of seniors on the Internet. There were a variety of reasons suggested for this. One, no doubt, is the fear of identity theft. This shouldn't be.

Identity theft is something we hear about all the time.  Seniors are particularly vulnerable to this crime. Predators known their prey. But, what can you do about it? At this point in time there is a vast industry of products and services that proclaim protection. Are they worth it? Do they work? Are they scams themselves?

We are going to have representatives from the New York County District Attorney's Office present, as a part of their Legal Bound Educational Program, discuss identity theft. They will talk about

• The types of crimes that can be committed over the Internet, and

• How individuals can protect themselves in cyberspace.

We hope after this presentation you and/or those you love will feel freer to enjoy the many benefits of the new technology and "connectedness".
