Wildwood Trail Thru Hike; 30.2 Miles

Where: Wildwood Trail
When: Sunday, Feb 2, 2014

Time:  5:00 am

Distance: 30.2 miles
Pace: 3.0 mph - 3.5 mph
Duration: 10-11 hrs
Difficulty: Difficult due to distance and pace

This hike is limited to 4 people until someone steps forward and volunteers to be one of the drivers of a car shuttle.  If there are additional volunteers to car shuttle, I will meet those drivers at the end of the Wildwood Trail on Newberry Rd at 4:15 am where we'll drop off one vehicle, then carpool to the parking lot across from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.  We will then meet up with everyone else at the World Forestry Center.  If you are wanting to car shuttle and are willing to drive, please indicate so in the comments section so that arrangements can be made.

THIS IS NOT AN EASY HIKE!  We will start at the Forestry Center and hike to the end of the Wildwood Trail on Newberry Rd.

Barring extreme weather conditions, this is a rain or shine hike.

Bring plenty of food and water as there is none along the way.  The trail will be very wet and muddy in spots so good water resistant hiking boots or shoes will be helpful and trekking poles are always a good idea.  February in Portland means rain is likely so dress appropriately.  It will be dark for the first couple hours of the hike so bring at least 2 headlamps or flashlights with extra batteries.  Bring a sense of humor because you'll need it somewhere around mile 25.

Please remember that I am not a professional hiking guide and that you are responsible for your own safety and well-being.

An other wonderful day in Forest Park with old friends and new friends. It was good to see the enthusiasm of the PCT aspirants for the second YAWTH (yet another Wildwood thru-hike) of 2014.

This truly was a great hike. Grateful for the companionship of old trail friends and I enjoyed the company of those I had not yet met. absolutely perfect weather and it was inspiring that such a large and diverse group could complete the hike with such aplomb. I particularly congratulate Kris on his back to back hiking distance records (how neat is that?). I had a fantastic time.

What an enjoyable hike! To have a day this nice on the 2nd of February is almost unbelievable. Everybody did so well today! I had fully expected that at least 2 or 3 people would be hurting toward the end but you all finished strong.

Hmmm. No "Thanks for the hike" or "Had a great time". No photos. Did you all survive?

LOL - after 30 miles, taking a nap was more important than posting to the computer!

Hey secret. I just found out that one girl's plus one is her 16 year old brother. Is that ok with you. It is fine with me. They are both doing the pct together this year.

    • Severt L.

Well, I kinda like that her gizmo is protecting my identity! Sarah, it is fine with me, most 16 year olds are pretty tough.

      I think so too.

I posted the final arrangements to everybody in an e-mail, including myself, and I don't see it showing up in my inbox yet so I'm going to post the note here as a reply to this comment.

So I'll repeat it as best as I can. Lou, Gary H, and myself will meet at Newberry Rd at 4:15 am. The rest of you will meet us at the World Forestry Center at 5am. That's the short but to the point version of my e-mail I'd written. :)

Gary, I will be needing you so any fantasy you had about getting an extra 45 minutes of sleep can be put to rest! :) On the plus side, it means you don't have to pay for parking!

    • Severt L.

Sarah, what I need to know is how many people will fit into your car besides your husband and yourself so that I can figure how many others still need to be shuttled back to the start point. I'll send out final arrangements this afternoon.

this hike is so appealing... and I'm not into Superbowl!

It will be good to have you along, Kris!

Lou is driving also and can carry 3 people so I've opened it up to 8 and when Gary gets back to us with how many he can carry I'll open it up further. Sarah, please keep me informed if/when people from the PNW group join so that we don't end up with more people than we have vehicles for although it looks like that won't be a problem! :)

Well, you don’t improve if you’re not willing to push yourself a bit.

      January 17, 2014

    • Gary H

Sorry Ryan. You aren't my type.

      January 17, 2014

  • Severt L.

I can't even begin to tell you all how impressed I am that you are taking on this challenge and how grateful I am that I can find 5 other people insane enough to do this hike with me! You have all become my friends and I can't think of any better way to spend the day.

You are the wind beneath my wings Severt :)

I gather Gene owes money to Severt.

Wow, you guys are doing it again!!!!! Good for you Gary. I am still recovering from a toe sprain from tripping that day, but you guys haven't seen the last of me. I will probably go for something shorter next time to save myself the embarrassment of hitting the 28 mile wall!!

    1 · January 14, 2014

    • Severt L.

Marlane, there is no way you would hit that wall again and I'm being real here. It's amazing how much easier this hike is to do the second time around as Gary will be able to attest to after this one is over.

      January 15, 2014

    • Gary H

Don't be using me as a poster boy!

This is Superbowl Sunday, not super hike Sunday.

    January 14, 2014

Ryan, the eggs are getting cold!! Better start fluffing up some of your feathers?

      January 14, 2014

    • Ryan

      :)
I'm just prioritizing my enjoyment of the party.

      January 15, 2014

  • Gary H

    I can volunteer to shuttle!

    January 13, 2014

    • Gary H

3 but we could squeeze in 5 plus me.
