Engineers are some of the most powerful people in the world. They have native intelligence, talent in mathematics and science and are responsible for numerous major technological advances. They not only possess knowledge of theory, but also how to apply that theory to real world problem solving and the creation of marvelous inventions. It’s unfortunate that they are so often unsung heroes.
Entrepreneurs, on the other hand, are often broad brushed as near mythical, larger-than-life, demi-gods. We live in an unprecedented time in history. The world economic crisis has many questioning their ability to survive. In a rare move, both democrats and republicans agreed on the JOBS (Jumpstart Our Business Startups) act and the president signed the bill in April to pave the way for new startups to more easily access financing.
There comes a point in some engineers’ careers when thoughts turn to having a more important role in society. They’d like to make a contribution and do work that has more meaning. The thoughts of others turn to starting their own business, they want to be their own boss, control their own destiny. Perhaps all they desire is a way to perform work using a broader range of their talents instead a narrowly defined skill set. At this unprecedented time in US history however, one can both start their own business and do a great service to their country by employing some of the 40 million that have lost their jobs.
Engineering Entrepreneur is a group for engineers who either are or would like to be either self-employed or business owners capable of employing others. With a background in counseling, engineering and entrepreneurship, I decided to start this group to provide opportunities to engineers interested in entrepreneurship. It is my hope, that through a collaborative effort, we can find greater satisfaction in our careers, a more meaningful lifestyle, and greater prosperity for all. Join us!
