DevDrinks: EWB & First Nations: is there a connection?

This week: Is there a connection between EWB and First Nations issues? Could there be? We invite you to join expert Jennifer Preston at our next Development Drinks for a unique opportunity to explore this link. There will also be beer & wings.

EWB traditionally focuses on poverty in developing countries in Africa. But here at home, some First Nations communities face development issues in areas such as water & mining, for example:

• In the "Ring of Fire" in northern Ontario the mining industry is in conflict with nine First Nations communities.

• Housing and water problems plague the community of Attawapiskat.

• Half of all aboriginal children in Canada live in poverty.

As EWB Canada, we would like to explore what our responsibility is and what role we could play by adapting our international development experience, here in Canada.

Jennifer Preston is co-editor of "Realizing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Triumph, Hope and Action" (2010) and Coordinator of the Indigenous Rights program at Canadian Friends Service Committee. She has spoken at events for Amnesty International, the Raven Trust, and the York University Centre for Human Rights.
