Hello dear ETIPs,
After our surprisingly well-attended evening at the Wine Touch winebar last month, it would be interesting to try something more themed for November. Also I thought it could be a good chance to look at remote teaching methods - as opposed to face2face.
Skype and similar tools are hardly "new technologies" but they are arguably still under-used and can contribute enormously to a trainer's range of teaching methods. Learners - especially of business English - are often too busy to leave their desks or meetings and the rates of cancellations can be high. Sometimes managers and professional people prefer to have lessons at 6:30pm, for instance, at which time you may not want to have your nose pressed into someone's armpit on the RER. Encouraging learners to connect online can make sense for both learner and trainer.
The functionality of these platforms also give the independent teacher an advantage over cheap off-shore telephone lessons, for example. The ability to message during the call helps with spelling out words and sharing documents on-screen can be a very powerful training method.
Some of you will already be conducting lessons over Skype, WebEx, Google Hangout etc and could pass on some useful tips to those who are just thinking about it.
Therefore I'm proposing a 'webinar' whereby we conduct the November MeetUp on-line, via one of these web tools.
So let's first choose a date that people can make, and then discuss the best way to stage our inaugural webinar.
I'm looking at the w/c the 18th November, so I've selected the Tuesday just to get things going. Please indicate in comments if another day that week would be better, or indeed another time of day.
Also any suggestions on the best software to use would be great. I'll also do some research this end. The choice of platform may depend on numbers. Of course those of you who are no longer in Paris can also participate!
Hopefully we can create a practical workshop on how to get the best out of these applications to improve our service to our clients and to manage our working week more efficiently.
The theme of the discussion selects itself, of course:
"Using web-based telecommunication tools for English training".
We'll have to send each other contact details nearer the date, of course.
