Get together via a webinar to explore on-line lessons

  • Nov 19, 2013 · 6:00 PM

Hello dear ETIPs,

After our surprisingly well-attended evening at the Wine Touch winebar last month, it would be interesting to try something more themed for November. Also I thought it could be a good chance to look at remote teaching methods - as opposed to face2face.

Skype and similar tools are hardly "new technologies" but they are arguably still under-used and can contribute enormously to a trainer's range of teaching methods. Learners - especially of business English - are often too busy to leave their desks or meetings and the rates of cancellations can be high. Sometimes managers and professional people prefer to have lessons at 6:30pm, for instance, at which time you may not want to have your nose pressed into someone's armpit on the RER. Encouraging learners to connect online can make sense for both learner and trainer.

The functionality of these platforms also give the independent teacher an advantage over cheap off-shore telephone lessons, for example. The ability to message during the call helps with spelling out words and sharing documents on-screen can be a very powerful training method.

Some of you will already be conducting lessons over Skype, WebEx, Google Hangout etc and could pass on some useful tips to those who are just thinking about it.

Therefore I'm proposing a 'webinar' whereby we conduct the November MeetUp on-line, via one of these web tools.

So let's first choose a date that people can make, and then discuss the best way to stage our inaugural webinar.

I'm looking at the w/c the 18th November, so I've selected the Tuesday just to get things going. Please indicate in comments if another day that week would be better, or indeed another time of day.

Also any suggestions on the best software to use would be great. I'll also do some research this end. The choice of platform may depend on numbers. Of course those of you who are no longer in Paris can also participate!

Hopefully we can create a practical workshop on how to get the best out of these applications to improve our service to our clients and to manage our working week more efficiently.

The theme of the discussion selects itself, of course:
"Using web-based telecommunication tools for English training".
We'll have to send each other contact details nearer the date, of course.

Cheers, Sean

    Hi Sean,
I am interested in this topic. Currently I use both skype and the phone to conduct English Lessons. It would be interesting to learn more about this - and make new contactss. I am a " technophobe" and am not at all sure how to link with you guys for the webinar. Please can you provide some information / instructions. something in the format of abc -- so I can understand !!
How long do you expect the webinar to last?

All set for 6pm? If anyone else wants to join just "contact" me on Skype:
      seanroe1
I've just seen the question regarding how long it might last - I'm guessing short of an hour.

      Cheers, Sean

    Hello,

In order to set up the Skype chat that we've planned for 6pm today, I need you to all add me as a contact. Then you are also my contacts and I can create a group.

    My Skype id is: seanroe1

Then at 6pm I'll click on 'Call group' and your PCs, Macs, mobiles, microwave ovens etc should start ringing!

I have a brand new cable connection and my PC is right next to the wifi box so hopefully the connection will be pretty good.

In terms of an 'agenda', please post any items that you may have on the MeetUp.com/English-teachers-in-paris page and I'll add them to this rudimentary list:
    1) Check it all works
    2) Find out who has experience teaching via Skype or similar and ask then to point out the strong and weak points
    3) See if we can work out how to share screen images across the group
    4) AOB!
    Regards, Sean

    Hi Sean,
I am so interested because I am working in Argentina now. Tuesday is fine.

Great idea, Sean. However, I'm still in Australia and also have a mobile phone internet connection so time difference and technology may make it impossible for me to attend. I'll give it a try.

I will 'attend' provided I can find out how to work those new technology things. LOL

Looks like we've a good group for this event. I endorse the suggestion to us Skype and I'm researching exactly how to go about it. I'll put out more instructions later!

    Cheers, Sean

I'm going to be 'offline' next week, as I have a week off from work. As a potential teacher, I'll be interested to hear how the webinar goes and how the discussion progresses.

Great idea! I vote for Skype as the software to use, and the date/time is OK for me too!

Hi Sean, nice to hear back from you. Sorry, couldn't make it to the last meeting as I was in Berlin. I'm very interested in this theme and would suggest Skype as we can create a group. The time and date are just fine for me. See you on the net! D
