Discover Girona, an old and beautiful city

  • Why Girona?

Girona is to Barcelona what Arrezzo is to Florence in Tuscany. It's smaller, quieter and a city that would be a top destination in its own right if it didn't have such a famous neighbor. Close to Barcelona, located midway between the sea and the mountains, Girona boasts a privileged position. The Old Town is one of the most evocative historical centres in Catalonia, with certain elements that are unique in Europe: an exceptionally well conserved Jewish quarter, the spectacular Carolingian wall and the grandeur of the Cathedral’s Gothic nave, the widest in the world.

And the best way to appreciate Girona is slowly: lounging at one of the elegant outdoor cafes, window-shopping at the boutiques housed in historic facades or wandering the circuitous, narrow lanes. There must be almost a dozen ways to wind your way up to the cathedral on the hill, and each one offers a different vantage of the Gothic spires, the Romanesque towers and the stone ramparts that once protected the city.

    THE PLAN

    • 9.30 am: Meet at Passeig de Gràcia Renfe Station (on the corner of Aragó street with Pau Claris street) to get our tickets (the MD train leaves at 9:51am from Barcelona arriving to Girona at 11:00 a.m).
    • Have a coffe / breakfast in Xocolateria Antiga, a very old and popular Cafe.
    • Walk around the old city (Jewish Quarter, the impressive Cathedral, Sant Felix Church, Carolingean wall, Arab baths, Devesa park, houses on the Onyar..).
    • 14.30 pm: Have lunch in a cheap restaurant or in a picnic area (you can bring your own lunch if you prefer).
    • Continue to visit the city.
    • 17.49pm: Take the MD train back arriving in Barcelona at 19:04 pm.

TOTAL PRICE: 23,80 euros (the price includes train return ticket -18,80 euros- + guided visit/org. fee -5 euros-).

    MINIMUM 5 PEOPLE!!!

Hola a tod@s, Fue un placer visitar Girona con vosotr@s. Julia, tomorrow I send you a list with a list of good Catalan Restaurants in Barcelona. This week I'm quite busy and I can't come to a casual lunch or dinner in "your" Catalan restaurant. But I think it is a great idea and I'm completely in for next week. Saludos y hasta la vista!

Anna Sky, Tried sending you a msg through Meetup and it bounced, something about a bad link or email address...
I was trying to msg you about the English grammar book I mentioned yesterday. "Practical English Usage" by Michael Swan.

Thanks to all for the a wonderful day in Girona, I really enjoyed it.
Here are the places I've told you about:
Xocolate con churos (and a variety of freshly roasted coffee) - called Tostaderos Bon Mercat, c/Baixada de llibreteria 1-3
The restaurant with Catalan food (very local, non touristy, inexpensive and good) - called Xaica, c/Jovellanos 5-7

We could meet there for a casual (not a big deal) lunch or dinner sometime this or next week. Let me know who is in.
Toni, the trip was well done, thank you. Maybe you could organize something similar to enjoy the beauty of the fall in Catalynia and the picnic in the park (just a suggestion).
