Walk the Chippewa Creek Trail

The Chippewa Creek Trail is one of the most picturesque and adventuresome in the local area. Downstream from the Chippewa Creek George Scenic Overlook the creek has sculpted a path through the rocks surrounding it. On a good day, that's the very path we'll take.

Total distance is expected to be around 3 to 5 miles.

Weather should be around 40F.  There's a chance of some rain earlier in the morning, which may impact the path we choose (as rocks can get slippery when wet).

Where to meet

The trailhead is located at the parking lot for the overlook, at the intersection of Chippewa Rd and Chippewa Creek Drive.  Should the lot be full, you can park at the Brecksville Shopping Center (a little ways up the hill on 82), the plaza directly across the street, or at the Harriet Keeler Area Parking Lot a little further down Chippewa Creek Drive.

What to expect

This group applies a different ethic to hiking than you may be used to.  We adhere to what you might call the "Appalachian Trail Guidelines":

* We recognize that the pace of the group is that of it's slowest member.  As such, we'll take periodic breaks, resting until everyone's breathing has returned to normal.

* While we obviously won't all be hiking at the same pace, the person in front should always be within sight of the person in back.  In this way, we maintain our cohesion on the trail to ensure nobody gets lost.  Trail safety is a primary concern.

* We will stop to gather at all trail branches, so nobody ends up wandering off in the wrong direction.

I had a really good time today. It was chilly as we started off, but before too long my winter hat came off and my summer cap went on. The water was higher than normal today, and that impacted our ability to traverse the rocks down in the creek itself, but the upside to that is that we had some really nice water flow to hear and observe.

We all ended up getting wet feet by the end, but oddly enough the water wasn't so cold and it was actually kind of pleasant for me (I avoided the water until the final creek fording). The route we took was definitely a bit much for my daughter, who is rather inexperienced at hiking and was intimidated by some of the footwork and balance required for parts of this path. But she did it!

As I think on the weather, objectively it was pretty bad: cold, and eventually snowing(!) lightly. But it didn't feel cold when we were moving, and down in the creek there was no wind to be had, so it was good hiking weather.

Does a person have to hike the whole trail?

    April 3, 2013

    • Adam S.

That's an oddly difficult question! As an adult operating under her own free will, you are certainly able to determine when the appropriate time for you to turn around is. Only walk *out* half so far as you are willing to travel.

On the other hand, should you willingly separate from the group, you are no longer under the auspice of the group leader. If you do decide to go your own way, please let me, or whomever happens to be leading a hike, know.

Hello everyone. Just wondering if dogs are permitted on these hikes , as I have two that could use the exercise as well.
