Film & Enneagram: The Past is a Grotesque Animal

THE PAST IS A GROTESQUE ANIMAL is a personal, accessible look at an artist – Kevin Barnes, frontman of the endlessly versatile indie pop band of Montreal – whose pursuit to make transcendent music at all costs drives him to value art over human relationships. As he struggles with all of those around him, family and bandmates alike, he’s forced to reconsider the future of the band, begging the question – is this really worth it?

Dir: Jason Miller. 2014.

The film begins at 1pm and is 77 mins.

Be sure to get tickets in advance

Afterwards, we'll meet to discuss the film and the Enneagram over dinner at a nearby restaurant: Pakwan Indian at[masked]th St San Francisco, CA. This is within easy walking distance from the theater.

Note about experience level: We will use the Enneagram numbers to identify the personality types. If you are new to the system, we strongly advise you to familiarize yourself with the various types and their numbers beforehand in order to better follow the conversation. Introductory information is available on the internet including the Enneagram Institute's "How to Begin with the Enneagram".

I thought Kevin might be a 6, but he was medicated and a bit hard to type.

Earl, did you say that you were familiar with the group Of Montreal? If so could you recommend a good intro album?

Sure! "The Sunlandic Twins" is my favorite and probably their most popular. I like how it balances experimentation with accessibility. Be sure to get the version with bonus tracks.

I enjoyed today's film and discussion (and food!). We typed Kevin Barnes as a Four, due to his approach to art as a construction and manifestation of his deepest self, his highly personal style, and his themes of heartbreak, angst, and insanity. High side of Four is transforming misery into beauty, using his problems to make performances that give meaning, connection, and a unique experience to his audience. Low side of Four is his self-absorption and difficulty in parts of his life in which he and his art are not at the center.
