Film & Enneagram: Frank

Frank is an offbeat comedy about a wannabe musician who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band led by the enigmatic Frank - a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head.

The 2014 British-Irish comedy-drama film was directed by Lenny Abrahamson and stars Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Scoot McNairy and Michael Fassbender as the title character.

The film starts at 5:35pm and is 1 hour, 36 minutes.

Dinner Discussion: Afterwards, we'll meet to discuss the film and the Enneagram over dinner at a nearby restaurant. Suggestions welcome!

Questions to Guide Discussion: We may discuss some or all of the topics here: Discussion Questions. It may help to refer to the list before watching the film.

Note About Experience Level: We will use the Enneagram numbers to identify the personality types. If you are new to the system, we strongly advise you to familiarize yourself with the various types and their numbers beforehand in order to better follow the conversation. Introductory information is available on the internet including The Enneagram Institute's "How to Begin with the Enneagram".

All - we discussed some of the influences on the music and what the songs would be like if developed further. Here are two recent songs I was reminded of, both by Neutral Milk Hotel:

"In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" - probably their most famous song:

"Holland, 1945" - loud and raucous, like some of the songs in the film:

    Enjoy!

Hmm...I like this music, which, to me, sounds nothing like Frank. Maybe it's the lack of a puppet head. :)

After thinking about personality types last nite, I applied it to KQED's Forum discussion on partnerships and called in!! You can here me at the 45 minute point of this recording of the show:

Very well done film, especially composing all that weird, downward looking music. I thought that John was a 7, who later revealed a domineering aspect when he was yelling at Frank. To figure Frank out, he probably was a combination of 3 types, later becoming like a depressed little boy. Got very dark the last 40 minutes, as they really wanted to show how far out Frank, Clara and John could go. Especially Clara.

Yes, excellent talk...movie was interesting but disturbing. The first half was sweetly quirky and just the right amount of dark; wasn't in love after that.

Thank you, Earl for hosting and facilitating our discussion.
