April 2008

Earth Day 2008
Every Day is Earth Day in Central Park

In Central Park, more than the grass is green.  From expanding our recycling program and tailoring tree care to enhancing the Park?s wildlife corridors, the Central Park Conservancy is focused on sustainable practices that benefit all of the Park?s users.  Learn more in the "green" section of our website by following this link.
As spring awakens, we hope to see you in the City's 843-acre green oasis.  Remember a few friendly tips for keeping the Park looking its best: carry in your picnic and bring out your trash, volunteer to rake leaves or plant bulbs, enjoy the Park from its pathways, and please avoid stepping on tree roots.  Mother Earth will thank you!
On Sunday, April 20, the Central Park Conservancy and Green Apple Festival will host an Earth Day celebration from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Rumsey Playfield (enter the Park at 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue).  The free fair features bluegrass artist Ricky Skaggs, blues-rockers Big Head Todd & the Monsters, musical duo The Bacon Brothers, South African singer-songwriter Vusi Mahlasela, and Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Vienna Teng.  Try your hand at planting and mulching projects, tree care and composting demonstrations, or crafts using recycled materials. Enjoy organic local treats from the Greenmarket. Earth Day in Central Park is presented by Chase.

6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Artist Iandri Randriamandroso guides participants in the construction of a large eco-mural, as part of this month?s Harlem Meer Social Hour ? an alternative to the happy hour scene for young professionals. The collective creation will be inspired by Iandri's "flat can" project, in which he uses imprints of discarded, crushed aluminum cans that he finds on the streets of New York City to create visual images.
