This is a fun weekend away, which entails doing conservation work for the National Trust over two days and in return we get free accommodation at the National Trust's basecamp at Slindon. The weekend is primarily to help the National Trust (NT) team with an assortment of conservation work from clearing paths, to planting new trees and removing stiles. The evenings are then spent with all of us enjoying the basecamp; cooking our own meals, having some drinks, playing games, etc...
In the past a typical weekend would consist of;
Friday - arrive late afternoon/early evening. Have some drinks, BBQ, play games etc...
Saturday - Help NT team with the conservation work. Generally from 9am - 4pm with lunch and breaks included of course. Pub or eat in for evening. More games and drinks.
Sunday - Do a smaller amount of conservation work, likely from 9am-12noon. Have some lunch, then clean and tidy up basecamp, before leaving for home at approximately 4pm.
Even if you have never been before, or if you do not consider yourself particularly green thumbed (but are willing to help out), I still definitely recommend it.
It is such a rewarding and fun weekend away. That's why we keep going back! Its been over 20 years now!!!...
Bring work clothes, waterproofs, thick gardening gloves and sturdy boots/wellies.
NOTE: The basecamp sleeps 17; 10 in one dorm, 6 in the other, and a single bedroom. For convenience, we normally split into girls & boys. So it is on a first come, first served basis.
