The Erie Card Game Players (ECGP) is a sister-group of the Cleveland Card Game Players (CCGP) which is one of the busiest Meetup groups in the Cleveland area (just take a look at their calendar). The CCGP was once comprised of three separate Meetup groups, which were each focused on a different type of card game; American games, European games, and a very old family of European trick-taking games played with a special deck known as Tarocchi in Italy, Tarock in Austria, and Tarot in France. These groups were eventually merged into one all-encompassing group, leaving two of the three sites abandoned. This ECGP Meetup site has been built upon one of these abandoned sites, and so it has some old events in its history, and a founding date of June 14, 2008. Don't be confused by any of that. In fact, you can just simply ignore it. As we make our own history, this will all fade further and further into the background!
One of the oldest members of the CCGP, Christina, recently moved to the Erie area. She has missed playing the games she learned with the CCGP, and recently asked for the use of this website to host a similar group in Erie. The result is this new Meetup group! We hope you will join us. We know you'll have fun if you do!
Both the ECGP & CCGP are owned by Gary Brunger, whose company, TaroBear's Lair, is North America's premier distributor of European regional playing cards and accessories. These are the card decks used for playing the games you will be learning with the ECGP! One of the most obvious differences between these decks and the American Poker deck is that different countries in Europe have their own suit systems (this has been true since the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries). You have probably noticed them flashing in the upper left corner of this site (and many of you were probably wondering what they were)! You can learn more about these suit systems and other ways the various decks differ from one another on the CCGP's general information site.
One of the many benefits of being an active ECGP member is that you will save 10% on all purchases of playing cards and accessories at TaroBear's Lair!
While the group is still in its early stages, Christina will probably concentrate on teaching the group one or two of her favorite games, which will surely include the CCGP's original game, the French game of Tarot*, which is still the most popular game in the CCGP, and the second most popular card game in France itself. It is also gaining popularity in the US and other parts of the world. You can be among the first people in your area to play it!
As the group grows, other games will be introduced to the group, and large, combined events with Gary and other members of the CCGP can be expected to appear on the schedule!
Join us in the exploration of some of the oldest, and most interesting, traditional card games in the world!
*You might be thinking "This group plays games with Tarot cards? What am I getting myself into?" To answer that, we suggest that you learn more about Tarot cards and the games they were actually designed to play. You can start off by visiting the website http://www.tarocchino.com/. In doing so, you will be embarking on an exploration of a fascinating subject! Remember, not everything we think we know as fact is necessarily correct! This is certainly true of this subject.
