I joined the Ethical Society of St, Louis in 1972 at 27. Ethical Culture Humanism has been an important part of my life ever since in building skills & social action. In 1980 I became the Sunday school director, rebuilding the program and curriculum with a talented team. I got involved in the larger Ethical movement, attending Rel Ed Conferences. I served on the America Ethical Union R E Committee, eventually becoming chair. In 1987 I was accepted into the professional leadership training program, served the St. Louis society as an intern and the Ethical Humanist Society of Chicago as acting leader. In 1991, I was hired by the American Ethical Union to be the AEU Director of Religious Education as well as "growth and development professional." I retired for health reasons in 1999, and continued to be active in the National Leaders Council and on the AEU Leadership Committee. I was one of the founders of the AEU Lay Leadership Summer School and served on staff from 1996 through 2008.
I am Joy McConnell, an Ethical Culture Leader since 1989. We moved to the Black Mountain area in November 2009. We love the natural beauty of the area as well as the friendly people, progressive atmosphere, culture and food.
I love it.
