Haley Morris-Cafiero is a photographer and assistant professor who began documenting the reactions people had to seeing an overweight person in public. We will see her photographs and read her essay about how this project began, how she feels about being judged by random strangers and the conversation she wants to start about why our society feels so justified in stereotyping people based on their weight.

Response to study about public reactions to overweight: I scold myself about my own weight gain, yet admit that I stare briefly. I think about the effect on their health. I have a close family member & friend with this issue. She's been through a lot medically. I hope we both will start/continue to excersize regularly. She is very tired from all she's been thru: don't know how life is from her point of view. I don't want to loose her: weight & some medical issues are intertwined. She believes that she must be resigned to how she IS & ignore it. She could be right. Another person appears to deny that she's overweight & has medically related issues. She may see her inner self as a sexy svelt woman. I hope we would/could? try to leave the sedentary. For strangers: contempt? - their weight as evidence that they don't try. I can't identify w/ the possibility that for some, there is no other way to be. I have regret & guilt.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
