Seattle Handmade (formerly etsyRAIN) Pages

What is Seattle Handmade?

Seattle Handmade (formerly known as etsyRAIN) is a membership based group of creative artists, crafters, craft makers, makers, and creatives that encourages connection, offers inspiration, and strives to provide real support to the creative community of Seattle and the greater Puget Sound.

Our group began as an “Etsy Street Team” in 2007 when launched their “Teams” program. Starting with a small group of 10 people, we eventually dubbed ourselves “etsyRAIN” and grew over the years until had just under 1600 members on our Meetup group. Some were active, but most weren’t. And we were really okay with that for a long, long time (6 years, to be exact).

The all-volunteer EtsyRAIN Leadership Team (ERLT) worked together year-round to create community events, online creative challenges, and numerous in-person meetups, craft nights, classes, and gatherings. We also worked really hard twice a year for 5 years to produce our very popular etsyRAIN Craft Shows. As the group grew, we knew we were creating something amazing and magical.

But…with so many members and so few participating the ERLT got burnt out. Like, crispy deep-fried. So much so that it became clear that something had to change. We were tired of explaining that even though we had “Etsy” in our name, that we truly wanted everyone to be involved. We have always been a group for more than just Etsy sellers, but our name belied our intentions. So, we put our heads together and tried to figure out what we could do to bring the magic back – and so, Seattle Handmade was formed!

The Transition from etsyRAIN to Seattle Handmade 2013 – 2014:

At the end of 2013, we worked with our friends at Beneficial Studio to create a new identity for our group. A new logo, a fresh look, and an easy to navigate website was created and now we are looking for members to join us as we transition away from being views as “just an Etsy team” and toward being the inclusive creative community that we’ve always wanted to be a part of!

What was etsyRAIN?

Established in 2007, etsyRAIN is an independently organized team of Puget Sound area artists and craft makers who own and operate shops on the popular e-commerce shopping site:

etsyRAIN is one of Etsy’s original "Street Teams" - now known as "Teams": A group of regional artists and craft makers who own and operate independent shops on the e-commerce site: While the majority of our members reside in the Seattle metropolitan area, we also have members as far north as Port Townsend and as far south as Olympia. We welcome all artists and craft makers from the Puget Sound region to join us!

etsyRAIN's mission nurtured a supportive local community of artists and craft makers that inspired, educated and promoted the growth of our member's individual businesses on Etsy and beyond.

Q. I want to (host an event, organize a craft show, have a get together, meet new people etc) Who do I ask? What do I do?
A. You don't really need to "ask" anyone for permission to do these types of things! We ENCOURAGE everyone to create and host their own events! Please post all of the information to the "How to get your event posted" thread on the board (for events and activities) OR the "Please help with the Calendar" thread (for notices and announcements). Just be sure to include all the necessary information (read the first page of each thread)

Q. I have a great idea for an event / activity, but I don't want to host or be responsible for organizing it. Will you do it for me?
A. We are happy to *help* you get an event together, if that’s what you mean. The way we see it, it's likely that if you can suggest an event that you have an idea of when and where you want it to happen, so Why NOT you? It's not hard to host an event - just think up the activity, date and time! We’ll help you get an event post up to our meetup event calendar and even help you manage your RSVPs - All you really need to do after that is BE THERE and introduce yourself! We love it when new members become active members!

Q. Seriously though. I am shy. I don't want to host! I just want to show up! Will someone else do it?
A. The only answer to that is: Maybe. Post your event idea and ask for help - most likely there is at least one other person would want to host or maybe even co-host the event with you? That could make it easier, right?

Q. I don't have an Etsy shop but really want to learn how to open one. Am I welcome here?
A. Yes! We no longer require our members to have Etsy shops so we welcome anyone who is creative, crafty, entrepreneurial or not to join us as a member! If you would like to know about opening an Etsy or other online shop, we are periodically organize workshops on all facets of starting and running a successful shop! Keep your eye on the calendar for updates!

Q. I don't have an Etsy shop and honestly, I really don't want to have one! (aka: what is anyway?) I'm really just looking for a group of crafty people to hang with. May I join?
A. YES! We welcome ALL creative crafty people who are looking to connect to other creatives in our community. Etsy is a great place to sell your work, but it is no longer a requirement for you to have an Etsy shop to join us! Yay!

Q. Do you require dues or fees to join?
A. We currently have a two-tiered membership program:
Basic Membership here on Meetup is FREE and Premium Membership is $40 per year available on our website: Seattle Handmade

Q. I have a (product / service / special offer / other) to sell to your members - may I join to tell them about my offer?
A. NO. We do not allow members to spam, solicit, or otherwise try to sell anything without a specific request by a current member. Any member who's only group activity is strictly SPAM will be removed WITHOUT Warning. Members who are active in other ways and then post spam content regularly will be warned ONCE. Any subsequent sales-only posts will result in immediate removal of that member.

Q. I have a personal question that I don't want to post on the board. Who do I email?
A. You can email Marlo with all of your etsyRain related questions!
