DIY Meals 101

  • Feb 16, 2014 · 5:30 PM
  • JJ's Place - North Eugene - I'll e-mail location later

This is another cook-together event! But with a fun twist.

I think one of the big barriers to healthy eating is having a sense that one can put together a meal with what is in one's cupboard and/or not having to follow a recipe. If you grow up learning to eat and cook one way, knowing how to use a different set of ingredients confidently can be quite a challenge.

So, I'm going to share my personal secrets with you. I'll talk for a bit about pantry staples and the anatomy of how to quickly put together several Do-It-Yourself (DIY) meals. Then with the ingredients provided, you will get to give it a try, putting together your own bowl.

I invite all of the experienced plant based eaters to come so that you can share your tips as well. And of course, all you newbies who said you are looking for ideas, this event is made just for you!

I will provide all of the ingredients. All you have to do is bring $5 per person and the willingness to step outside the recipe box.

If I can, we will do dessert and a salad, but I'm not promising that. Because I will be buying ingredients and making plans based on the Yes RSVPs, please be especially considerate in managing your communication. Anyone with a 'Yes' RSVP between February 13 and 16 will be on the hook for the $5 whether you attend or not. (Just change a 'yes' RSVP to a 'no' before Feb 12 to avoid the fee.)

I'll be sending out an e-mail on February 12 with directions to my house and last minute information and instructions. Please let me know if you do not receive the e-mail. (Meetup e-mails seem to get stuck in spam quite often.)

There is a 20 person limit to this event. But since Meetup will manage a wait-list, please do sign up even if the 20 maximum is reached.

I hope to see you there!

Jennie: No problem, I knew what you meant. I have sent you the e-mail. I hope it got through and that you are able to make it. I've made copies of a bunch of sauce recipes, plus have made several and will have several store-bought ones on hand. I think this is going to be so fun. Thanks. - JJ

Sorry I can't attend this. I will be attending a vigil Sunday afternoon for the dogs killed by Greenhill and don't think I'm up to two events. I hope you all have a wonderful time!

Marilyn: That's very nice that you are doing the vigil. Hope to see you another time.

I do not have a car. Is there a bus route close to the location?

    February 11, 2014

    • JJ

Robert: I am so sorry! I never go the e-mail that should have gone out with your comment. So, I didn't see it until now. There IS a bus route that goes near my house, but I'm not sure how good the timing will be. I'll e-mail you the address. Also, if you are interested, maybe you can hitch a ride with someone else?

Just got a group email from JJ. She wrote: "On the upcoming February 16 event: DIY Meals 101. I hope that I didn't scare anyone off. " I can personally attest..... JJ covers all ground in being the perfect host, so if anyone has any doubts or is intimidated re: food prep, DON'T! JJ takes care of her guests in a 5 star fashion. (And you could say Duke is the maitre de.)
