2nd Annual Eugene Veggies Summer Picnic

Last year's summer picnic was a huge hit. Everyone had a great time and the ladder golf provided some fun entertainment. I bought lawn darts for this year to expand our gaming options. This is a great event for the whole family.

What To Bring
* a potluck dish to share (free of meat, dairy and eggs) (please bring more food the larger your group)
* a serving utensil for your dish
* an ingredient card for your dish (or the packaging if you buy a dish)
* a beverage for yourself if you want one
* a chair or blanket to sit on

I will supply eating utensils and paper plates, a big plastic trash bag, and name tags. I will also supply two card tables and table coverings for as many tables as we get. (I only own two tables, and we probably need at least one more.) The tables are for the food, not to sit at...

Volunteer Opportunities - Can You Help?
(1) Card Table - we will probably need 1 or 2 more card tables. If you can bring one, please let me know.
(2) Music - do you play the guitar or other group instrument? Feel free to bring it along if you would like to provide some entertainment.
(3) Lawn Games - if you have your own lawn game to bring - please do! Or even just a frisbee. I have one for sure, possibly 2, ladder golf sets. Plus the lawn darts.
(4) Permit Work - if we get a permit with the city of Eugene, more than 20 people can particpate. The permit costs money (I think: $15 plus a security deposit) and there is some paperwork to fill out. But last year we had the full 20 people. It would have been nice to open this event up to more people. If you are willing to spend a bit of money and do some paperwork, please let me know!
(5) Clean Up - can you stay at the end of the event to help me make sure the area is cleaned up and get my tables back in my car?

Location:
To the left (when facing the playground from the street) of the "River Play Discovery Area" (fancy playground) in Skinner's Butte park. About a short block away are some nice trees/shade. This site is nice for being a central location for most of our members.

Here is Eugene's page for the play area:

Attendance Limit
20 people is the limit unless someone volunteers to do the permit thing. Meetup will maintain a waiting list and automatically sign up people on the waiting list if someone drops out.

NOTE: I will be sending out a last minute e-mail on Wednesday, June 18 with further instructions on location and other important details. If you do not get that e-mail, be sure to let me know so that I can send you another copy. Some people have reported problems with Meetup E-mails getting through. If you need to get an e-mail from me, let me know by e-mailing me directly from the 'send e-mail' link on my Member page. Include your personal e-mail and/or phone so that I can be sure to get the e-mail to you outside of the Meetup site.

Thanks, everyone! Aidan and I had a great time and he found plenty to eat -- although his mom also fed him before we came ;) He and I both thought your cookies were fabulous, JJ. It was also very nice talking to you again, Jennie.

HI, JJ. In addition to a card table I'm planning on bringing a vegan Phad Thai dish and some Jasmine rice. Aidan, however is not vegetarian and asked if it was OK if we brought something non-veggie for him. I said I didn't think it would be a problem since it would only be for him, but we'll figure something else out if having meat there for him would bother others?

Hi, Glenn. I'm so happy you're bringing Aidan. I, too, REALLY want him to have a great time. While I fully respect everyone's diet outside of Eugene Veggies, Eugene Veggies is meant to be a place for people to get together and share a plant based meal. We have lots of members who are not vegetarian, but at our events people refrain from eating meat, dairy and eggs. I think there is going to be a wide variety of food. I would be surprised if he does not find plenty that he would enjoy eating. Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to seeing you both there. (I have some cookies just for Aidan.) -JJ

I didn't know Aidan was only 9 and I don't want you to feel I didn't want to be welcoming, I just know that's how we've done events in the past. I honestly think he'll be fine.

I can't wait to come! I have a sleep study that night at 8:00, so I will have to leave by 7:30, but I can have fun for a solid couple of hours!

I am recuperating from recent surgery so I need some information to determine if I am up to attending this event. How far is it from the parking area to the picnic area? Also would someone be willing to carry my chair from my car to the picnic area and back, I am not supposed to be doing any lifting at this time.

    • JJ

Kathy: I hope you are able to recuperate quickly and easily! As for parking: It depends on what is available when you come. If any of the street parking right next to our location is open, you would only need to travel the distance of about 1 house lot. However, the street parking fills up pretty quickly. If you had to park in the parking lot next to the playground, you would be about two? blocks away from our location if memory serves. I'm sure there will be plenty of people happy to help you with your chair. I'll do it as soon as I'm available or maybe someone else will volunteer.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
