The Next Big Thing

NETHERLANDS / 2013 / COLOR / 70 MIN / ENGLISH, DUTCH S.T. ENGLISH

"Trailer  "Over the last few years, the world of contemporary art has undergone drastic changes. Our modern-day taste is no longer determined by the great museums or by the critics, but by dealers and mega-rich collectors. Despite the financial crisis, the auctions at Sotheby’s and Christie’s are breaking record after record. This film looks into the transformation of the art world and the consequences this shift of power is having on artists, collectors, dealers, museums and the history of art. Interviewed are various artists, collectors, specialists and museum directors.

Were there any "big names" mentioned?

They didn't mention any Montreal-based artists. The documentary focused on big auction houses such as Sotheby's and private collection who were buying and selling top-tier painters such as Mark Rothko. However, they also featured a young, emerging artist from the Cluj art scene and his comments on the art market.

Highly educational and informative documentary about the inner workings of the international art market. Since I have already worked in an art gallery that sold art merely as an investment, I have to agree with the paradigm shift as portrayed in this movie that took place mainly in the latter part of the 20th century. Many modern artists nowadays rise to the top not so much due to raw talent but because of the hype generated by auction houses and "art consultants". However, up to 80% of these hyped artists will be forgotten in 20-30 years.
