Beth, despite what people say about it, you organized this really well and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people and enjoyed the event immensely. Thank you.

      Totally agreed with you Ashok!

      Thanks! it was fun

The Air Fest was great! Love the Thunderbird. I only saw the group briefly though, sorry about that. After a long walk into the Base, feeling like dying, finding a place to sit down was my priority. It was good to see some of you even if it was short.

    March 24, 2014

  • Jenny

Thanks for letting us know of this event . We were thankful that we got there on our own and left (early) when we did w/o the complications of meeting up [as it was, we looked for you all, but didn't see you in the vast crowds]. It was enough of a 'zoo' as it was, and will probably be the last time Jim and I try to slam ourselves down in to a small peninsula with a bazillion people going to the same place at the same time :-).

    March 24, 2014

  • Patricia B.

Thanks Beth for organizing it. We had a grat time!

    March 23, 2014

  • Frank R.

A spectacular show, well organized with good food (Bratwurst) and a lot of highlights, especially the Thunderbirds. Unfortunely it got so crowded, that I have not seen all of you in the end.

Thank you Beth for organizing it, I had a great time ! :)

Do not wait for me. I will make my way with HART from the city. Maybe we can make meeting points at special times and write or show photographs where you will be at a certain time via meetup.

I asked someone that one of main coordinators of the event. She said we can drive to Macdill Airforce base and goin follow everyone that will be directed to park. You can park at Britton Plaza in South Tampa park there and we can carpool down. I will be down that way around 8:30am or later with my lawn chair and snacks. When you guys figure out where you are meeting. Please call or text me[masked]-8135. Thanks

    March 21, 2014

  • Gabriele D.

Yes I'm a little confused does that mean you cannot drive up or Dale Mabry to the Air Force Base to get parking? The Britton Plaza shuttle service every 15 minutes that might be an option. Looks like if you make it by 11 most shows can be watched

    March 20, 2014

    • Beth V

Yes, you can drive up Dale Mabry or MacDill only to enter the base.

      March 20, 2014

  • Beth V

The roads leading from those gates to the containment side of the base (East of MacDill Ave) will all be barricaded off at MacDill Ave. No other roads will be blocked-off other than during the time the Thunderbirds are performing (see Performer schedule at website above,) when roads that are on the far South end of the base will be blocked as they are in the show safety box. This will affect very few people due to the location of the show box. Travel on the containment side of the base will be more congested than normal, but other than that plan for normal traffic flow.

    3. Be prepared for a long day out in the sun. Make sure your skin is covered or use sun block and re-apply periodically to avoid sunburn. Also, drink at least eight ounces (one cup) of water every hour to stay hydrated. The first indicator of dehydration is being thirsty or having a dry mouth. In the event you need medical assistance, please contact any uniformed military member

4.Do not bring the following items: Coolers, glass containers, pets, fireworks, knives, weapons of any sort, and large tote bags are all prohibited to ensure the security and safety of attendees. Bicycles, roller blades, etc., are acceptable modes of transportation for getting to the event; however, they will not be used inside the show area due to safety concerns.

    March 20, 2014

  • Beth V

    1. We'll be keeping a close eye out for any inclement weather that comes through the area during AirFest -- particularly lightning. If lightning is detected or predicted in close proximity to MacDill Air Force Base, we will postpone all aerial demonstrations and ask that you seek shelter in your vehicles. Even with the large aircraft hangars we have on the base, there is not enough space to shelter the 75,000 people we're expecting to join us for this spectacular event. Please follow instructions given by the announcer. Additional information will be available on Facebook and Twitter. 2.Medical personnel will be stationed in Hangar 3 and will be on call to render assistance during AirFest. If you need or observe anyone else who needs medical assistance, please dial 911 or contact any uniformed military member.

    March 20, 2014

  • Beth V

For those driving, plan ahead and budget your time accordingly. When in doubt, please follow the direction of all SFS personnel and augmentees as these are our Teammates charged with ensuring our safety and there is no effort to block/delay any traffic unless for primary concern of
safety/security. Have enough gas in your vehicle to sit in the queue lines that will exist and remember that SFS is making every effort to ensure as many people from the MacDill/Tampa area can enjoy a SAFE AirFest!

    March 20, 2014

  • Beth V

This will affect very few people due to the location of the show box. Travel on the containment side of the base will be more congested than normal, but other than that plan for normal traffic flow.
Military personnel/dependents wishing to attend the show should access the base via Bayshore gate and park on the South Ramp, or walk and plan to use the Condor Street access point.

  • Beth V

Latest Update - will be serveral posts due to word limit on Meetup

    PARKING/GATE ACCESS/ROAD CLOSURE-TRAFFIC FLOW:
Once roads are blocked-off in the morning on Sat/Sun, ANY personnel needing access to the EAST side of the base will need to use the Bayshore Gate. On Saturday and Sunday, the Dale Mabry and MacDill Ave Gates will close at 0500 and not re-open until 0800 for Public Access. Base personnel should not attempt to use those gates as they will be inbound only in the mornings, and at the end of the show they'll be outbound only until approximately
1900, when normal use will resume.

Box seats are available for sale for $15 plus $1.49 fee. These are not in an air conditioned environment but they are the best view for the show.
"The seats are not in an a/c controlled environment, nor do they have upgraded bathrooms. The seats are offered if you would like guaranteed seating at show center for a better view of the aircraft passing by." - MacDill Air Force Base

The airplane exercises show itself is truly spectacular. The Base personnel have their natural ability to organize a huge crowd. If you go prepared the experience will be much better. There is information everywhere.
It would help you if you bring your own baby wipes or paper because the only restrooms are Port A Potties and they run out. You have to wait in line to use them and they Smell. Sorry, but you will thank me for this.
You will be out in the weather and the only seat is the one you bring and you have to carry it from you car parking space which is a loooong distance.
Also make sure you remember or note where you parked your car.
I have experienced the show in the past a few times and hopefully they have made some improvements.
If this is your first time at the air show you will be impressed with the live performance and their dangerous, daring stunts . It is amazing what they can do.
    It is a beautiful show.
    Happy Patty's Day, everyone!

It's not that we didn't enjoy every one we met yesterday, it's just that this sounds like a zoo we'd prefer to wander in to and out of without having interact. if it is too hard to get there, we'll probably just witness from a distance. If the exodus looks painful, we'll buzz out early. If we see you all, we'll certainly stop by to say 'hey', otherwise, we're looking forward to meeting (some of you, 'again', others for the first time) the next day here in OUR 'neck of the woods', Tarpon Springs. Hope the Air Show Meet-Up provides a grand day out!

Latest Info from MacDill Air Force Base Facebook page:
AirFest 14 is expecting a great turnout this year. To help manage the traffic we are highly encouraging people to walk, ride bicycles, carpool or take public transpiration. HART is offering bus services from Dale Mabry and Himes, Marion Transit Center, and Britton Plaza. For more info call the HARTinfo Line at[masked]-HART. ‪#‎TBAirFest14‬

    March 13, 2014

    • Beth V

Thanks Rosa. They will give us a map also, as to where parking is allowed once inside the gate. Once I have that can pick an area to meet for those who wish to drive themselves or take the bus

      March 13, 2014

  • Wasana

All area of South Tampa usually very crowded, bumper to bumper, as people are coming from every directions, trying to get in to all 3 gates. If you break off line and go meet each other just not sure how you would get back in line. Since they are bumper to bumper and hardly moving, folks aren't willing and or able to let you cut in. Your best bet is to keep on moving and go on in and then look for each other there. We have our cell phones. Just thought I'd tell you for what ever it is worth. I've done it so many times and now luckily, I live right outside the gate. So see you there.

    March 7, 2014

    • Beth V

Correction: Bayshore gate will be for those who are working since this is a 24/7 /365 base. McDill gate is currently being renovated and 'should' be open by the time of the airshow. For the show only Dale Mabry will be open all day, McDill gate will be opened only for a certain hours at the begining of each day.

      March 8, 2014

  • Wasana

Sorry, don't hate me for sharing the experience with you.

    March 7, 2014

  • Wasana

I'll meet you guys inside. I'll be walking in sometimes in the afternoon. The jets usually take off late afternoon. They do have food and drinks and lots of beer for a price. They will check your bags prior to entering the flight line. Keep things to bring very minimal, you won't be able to take them in.

    March 7, 2014

  • Jenny

Sounds like fun. My husband is a huge 'air show' fan and is enthusiastic about finding other 'worldly' friends here in Florida. May drive ourselves, but will look for instructions on how to coordinate arrival.

    • Jenny

Great, Beth ... as I suspected, Jim loves that we'll be doing the air show with you all. If we do drive, we can carry a couple of others in 'Hissy' (our Honda 'Fit'). Looking forward to the 22nd!
