The "Wilderness", a Mule and a UFO!!! A 4-season Backpacking experience!

The Charles C. Deam Wilderness is Indiana's only designated Wilderness area. It covers almost 13,000 acres and has a rich history dating back to the Pioneer days.

This is the second meet-up in a 4-part series. We will backpack different sections of the Wilderness during each season.  Each trip is planned in an area of the Wilderness that will give us the best experiences for that season.

This trip will concentrate more on exploring and working on backcountry camping skills than putting in backpacking miles!!!

Spring:

Day 1: We will start our adventure from the Grubb Ridge Trailhead. (Staging a car at the Fire Tower Trail Head)We will begin our hike on the Axsom Trail taking our time to explore the Pioneer ruins along the way.  We will connect with the Terrill Ridge Trail and head North to the Terrill pond.  Once there we will explore the pond and cemetery. We will have several options for camp sites. We can stay by the pond or explore further to the North and pick a site by Lake Monore. This is a short hiking day and will give us lots of camp time and exploring time. (Geodes!!!)

Approx backpack miles: 5 miles.

Exploring miles: ENDLESS!!!

Day : After Breakfast and breaking down camp we will retrace our steps and head South towards the Fire Tower Trailhead.  Pack up and head somewhere yummy to eat!!

Approx miles: 2.5

• This and all future trips are limited to 10 Adventurers per Wilderness Regulations.

• Each trip will be open for anyone to RSVP. Spots will not be held for prior trip attendance. First come, first hike!!!

•  Every effort will be made to abide by the  Leave No Trace principles.

• There is no additional fees or permits for these trips.

• We will arrange times, transportation and carpool issues after the close of the RSVP's.

• No animals or guests will be allowed on these trips. We will be sharing some of the trails with horses during the different seasons.

• It is recommended that you have some backpacking experience but will not be required.

• The review for these trails have been that they are easy-moderate hiking.

Sara, I'll give it 5 stars. No ruins but garlic biscuits. I will give credit to Chris for the olive oil.

It looks like it's just me and Tarah & Seth leaving from North HS Saturday morning so I'll offer to drive.

    April 11, 2014

    • Martin

Use the entrance from Hwy 41. You'll see my red Toyota 4Runner. If it is more convenient I live on the north east side near Oak Hill and St George. I can give you more information if this is a better option.

Guys, my baby sitter just backed out at the last minute. I'm pretty sure you guys are going to hate us at this point, but unless I can work something out last minute we might have to back out after all :(

So happy to be able to go! The Deam is about 25 minutes from my house so I will be meeting you guys there. Anyone is also welcome to camp out in my backyard on Friday night. Which trailhead/when should I meet everyone?

Sorry guys, I keep meaning to get on here and let you guys know what's going on, but I was hoping I would be finding out soon an wanted to wait until I knew something concrete. Seth's boss might make him work Saturday, but we are still hoping to work it out and come. I will be even if Seth can't, but I guess he isn't going to know until tonight. Sorry for making you guys wonder.

Also, Everyone is welcome to join up with the hammock hangers on Friday night. It's going to be a party! Ground dwellers are not turned away!

    1 · April 8, 2014

    • Chris N.

FYI: The hammock hangers campsite is off trail and is about an hour hike from the fire tower parking lot. You go down Sycamore trail to campsite #2 (the one we stayed at last trip) and instead to crossing the stream to the site, you turn north (left) and follow the creek upstream up into the valley where it widens and flattens out.

I looked them up and wondered qbout that. Looks like a blast.

I am definitly coming and meeting at the trailhead. going to be a great weekend.

    1 · April 9, 2014

  • Sara Marie S.

Since we will get to the camp site early it will provide a lot of opportunity to explore the area. It will also give us time to practice (or have fun with) any backcountry skills we want to work on. I'm thinking about making a camp oven and "try" to bake something. You can find lots of ideas on survival websites or blogs. No pressure to do something - sometimes it is more fun to just it and watch others be silly;)

    2 · April 6, 2014

I'm going to stay and explore. There may be some morel mushrooms.

Hey Sara, I just received an email, the Bloomington Craft Beer Festival is the 12th from 4-7. Maybe we could...

    1 · April 2, 2014

    • Jason S. D.

we can be festival crashers. we can tell'em we know a guy.......

      April 6, 2014

    • Sara Marie S.

Is it possible to get tickets yet? I will be staying back at the campground but you can take anyone who wants to go in my van. We can park it at the fire tower. Depending on where we camp it would only be 2-3 miles out.

Is really still three weeks away. I'll have to get into the woods before then. I can't wait.

    March 25, 2014

Lots of space open this weekend!

      March 25, 2014

    • john f.

I'll get myself some "woods time" on Sunday. Planing a hike for my Cub Scouts, so I'll hike the trail before hand, to check for hazards. Thanks for the Invite.

      March 26, 2014

  • Chris N.

Sara, what time will you be at the trailhead? John and I will be staying there Friday night somewhere inside the Sycamore Trail loop.

    2 · March 19, 2014

  • Chris N.

Hey John. The Hoosier Hang 2014 is the same weekend at the same place! I'm thinking of going up Friday morning and hanging with them and then meeting our group on Saturday.

    March 17, 2014

    • john f.

I talked to my wife & I'm good to go to the Hoosier Hang with you. It will be my first time.

      March 18, 2014

    • Chris N.

Excellent! First time for me too. I'll go add my name to the list. I just happened to see it while doing a little research on HH for my next hammock. It's now nearly complete. It's longer and wider and 8 oz lighter. I just have to add in the elastic for the "Knotty Mod" and it will be done. I am pushing the limit using 1.1 oz ripstop.

      March 18, 2014

  • Sara Marie S.

Welcome Tarah and Seth! So excited to see new members! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the trip. Since we haven't met yet any info on your hiking backpacking experience would be great. It will help me get to know the experience levels of the group. We have some experienced backpackers signed up so far and we are happy to answer any questions ie. gear, food, water etc.

We both have been before. I used to go with my dad a lot, but he hasn't been going very much anymore. I don't think either one of us has gone on any extended trips (more than 2 nights), but we both enjoy it and look forward to getting involved in the group! Are there any special rules or guidelines we should know about?

      1 · February 7, 2014

    • Sara Marie S.

No special rules or guidelines. Very excited to hike with you both. If you haven't been to Deam before it is a great location. Nice trails and campsites. Would recommend poles since it is horse trails, they can be torn up in areas. Each hiker is responsible for their own gear, food, etc. closer to the date we will set a carpool location and usually people will post items they will be bringing that can be shared with the group (water filter, special snack, etc) Looking forward to a great trip.
