Professor Mayer will talk about the Russian meteoroid and the large 2013 asteroid that passed within 17,000 miles of Earth's surface.

There are at least 2 more large asteroids in Near-Earth orbits: one in 2027 and the other in 2029. Both of these objects will come at least as close to Earth as 17,000 miles.

He will discuss the probabilities of collision and the celestial mechanics of avoiding collisions.

NASA is tracking over 10,000 Near-Earth objects and this information is published in NASA's data on

The calculated closest-approach figures are expressed in Lunar Distance units (LD)
