Bitcoin for Local Businesses

  • March 19, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • Meeting Room Suite 105

Let's get local businesses to accept bitcoin! This meeting is for everyone who owns a local business or who knows someone who does. Discussions will focus on the no risk ways to accept bitcoin and the great advantages for businesses who accept bitcoin. The goal of the meeting is to get new businesses to start accepting bitcoin right away. The meeting should also plan a local tour with ReliaCar to take interested parties to all the current (and future) local businesse that accept bitcoin. A video of the whole process will advertise bitcoin to the world.

Hi folks! We're excited to host folks for the April 16th meeting at Spare Key. We just started a blog. Please feel free to follow us -- and please share with others! We're hearing from other non-profits and charities asking us more about what we're trying to do with bitcoin and other crypto currencies.

Folks, as I said last night, it's a brave new world out there. Enjoyed hearing what folks are up to and for organizers making it happen. I'd be happy to host the next MeetUp if that is helpful. Let me know!

This was my first meetup, and I had to leave a little early so I didn't get to meet quite a few of you, but overall it was a good time.

Garrett: I didn't get to followup with you, but keep me informed with Nakamoto Circle announcements. Also shoot me a line: [masked], as I may need some websites developed in the future and would prefer to start with someone who accepts crypto.

Erich Mische: I didn't get to speak with you about it, but I would advise getting in touch with http://bitcoin100.org/ - Offering $1000 in bitcoin to nonprofits that help promote the cause. For the other daytraders, feel free to follow my trades as I share a lot for free: @collinlahay - Let me know your addresses as well. Hopefully I will see a few of you again at the next event.

I'd really like to start up a local trade circle at these events! I have an app I built called 'Nakamoto Circle' that allows orders

Bobby Lee on record today with relevant egg before chicken statement: "Once bitcoin has a stable value, merchants will start accepting bitcoin." http://ow.ly/uL2Sh . Not sure it was well articulated, but certainly for wide-spread adoption beyond lead-user/early-adopters this would help.

Good sign that the mainstream business outlets are still publicizing bitcoin. It will get more people curious... and that is good

Looking forward to the event tonight! Nothing like meeting up with other bitcoin enthusiast to get me pumped up about crypto!!

To get into the building, you must go the back and we will have someone waiting near the door because there are automatic locks that set at 5pm. There are vending machines and we will provide refreshments and coffee.

Just one week away! Don't have anything specifically planned in terms of a presentation or anything. Anyone that wants to present some ideas in front of the group is free to plan an agenda. I suppose it is just a casual meet and greet and learning session. The room is just a plain conference room.

What is the future of BitCoin to this meetup group considering the recent announcements?

The honey badger is unaffected -- as bad actors are allowed to fail the underlying infrastructure grows stronger & even antifragile -- I see this as a transition as the end of mtgox represents one of the last vestiges of bitcoin's first rise as bigger more sophisticated players move. I am assuming that is the announcement you were referencing

Looking forward to meeting you Brooks. Personally I have only set up Btc payments for my small business. Educating both potential customers and workers takes some effort.

(Part 1 of 2) Hey guys, Love the idea! I was actually looking to do a similiar event myself - so I wanted to see if we could partner up. I've been spending a lot of my efforts working on helping businesses accept bitcoin and I have realized there can be a lot more that goes into it than just getting a wallet set up and the "we accept bitcoin" logo on the website...

There is a e-commerce company I have been talking to in the Twin Cities that has given me the green light to add bitcoin to their payment system... but man has it taken A TON of work. ..

First I needed to educate all the employees on what is a bitcoin and how it works and if you think this takes just 1 meeting.. HA (to be continued)

(Part 2 of 2) Second, the business needs to set up processes for the accounting system, return policies, tax classifications, informing the customer service reps in case they have inbound phone calls about bitcoin payment issues.
Then there is the whole communication with the IT team, having them set up the payment process, running test runs...

So its been about 2 weeks we have been in communication and working on this and I feel we are at least a couple more weeks away from going live with this. Has anyone else experienced all these "hurdles" if you will?? Its opened my eyes to how much of a learning curve there really is to accepting bitcoin. The whole concept of "fast and easy" only applies if A; you already understand bitcoin and B: you are a 1-2 man operation. Anyway, I would love to get involved with this event. Share some of my experiences as well as be available to help anyone interested in adding bitcoin. - Brooks

Can't make it tonight, but I was able to get our business, MentorMate, to start accepting Bitcoins. Happened just last week.

My company and I will also provide Pizzas and beverages and we can use a public meeting room in our office building. Hopefully, by mid-March we can get enough prospective businesses and other interested parties to make it to the meetup.

Please suggest anything to improve this meeting. Very flexible on times and locations. I have been only to one Meetup, but I talked to a lot of cool people, and the plan for a tour of local businesses was mentioned. I think it is a great idea. ReliaCar really wants to help make this happen.

    February 9, 2014

    • Doug

I love this idea and suggested it. I might be out of town that day, but I would recommend a day in March to allow more planning and to get the word out.
