We have have meetups every other Thursday for people who have left or are leaving Christianity, as well as occasional fun get-togethers. In everything, we mostly do two things:
Provide a kind and thoughtful community for people who are leaving or who have left Christianity. You may find that this is the one place where people not only understand your struggles and isolation, but also get your communion wafer jokes.
Engage in serious but OPEN conversation about theological, philosophical, and mystical thought. And here the final answer is never going to be "Jesus!"
About the regular groups:
The first is the bi-monthly Ex-Christian Support group specifically for ex-Christians (or Christians in the process of leaving the faith) from all denominations. We share our stories and current challenges and then develop a conversation on themes as they arise. I act as a non-professional facilitator (I am not a psychologist nor social worker and will not be dispensing any advice.) We ask, in fact, that all participants refrain from "fixing" each other in any way, and that you come prepared simply to share your own experiences and to listen to each other.
Our second is our Fellowship, where we get together to hang out in various activities. Sometimes we also have theology discussions. Suggestions are requested. This group encourages debate, while the support group does not.
ABSOLUTELY NO EVANGELISM is allowed at ANY meeting, and anyone attempting to convert or "re-convert" anyone will be asked to leave.
Privacy is respected, at your own limits, although we will be meeting in public places.
Please come bearing a sense of generosity and kindness to your fellow members.
We're always happy to have new members and we'd love to see you here. Please note that while all are welcome to our Post-Theo group, we ask that only people who identify with the experience of "leaving Christianity" come to our support group. Thanks for your respect in this matter.
P.S. A few websites we endorse:
ExChristian.net: The best place we're aware of on the internet for connecting with other people who have left Christianity. Lots of "testimonials" and other stuff here.
Stuff Christian Culture Likes: Not quite ex-Christian, but ex-Mars Hill, which means a lot to some people. A good little cathartic corner for some, and typically very funny. Also, a great watchdog.
LeavingChristianity: This page has a huge list of links to other resources on, well, leaving Christianity. Scroll down to find them.
