Here are the questions we will discuss tonight:

Justice and punishment

I want to examine the philosophical and political basis for the concept of punishment. In particular, I want to ask whether there is any moral basis for it from an individual and political perspective.

Some questions:

  • What is the difference between punishment and vengeance?
  • What is the difference and the relation, if any, between criminal punishment and discipline (for example, of children) ?
  • What is the role of punishment in a judicial system?
  • What is the relation of punishment to (a) incapacitation (b) deterrence (c) restoration (d) education/rehabilitation?

(Don't forget - we meet just inside the store, by the cafe area.)
