Here are the questions we will discuss tonight:

Justice and punishment

I want to examine the philosophical and political basis for the concept of punishment. In particular, I want to ask whether there is any moral basis for it from an individual and political perspective.

Some questions:

  • What is the difference between punishment and vengeance?
  • What is the difference and the relation, if any, between criminal punishment and discipline (for example, of children) ?
  • What is the role of punishment in a judicial system?
  • What is the relation of punishment to (a) incapacitation (b) deterrence (c) restoration (d) education/rehabilitation?

(Don't forget - we meet just inside the store, by the cafe area.)

Anyone know how long these meetings/discussions usually last? I haven't been to one in a while. I'll be going to a jam session afterward and may need to meet some people and grab a bite in between.

Who attended?

  • 14 attendees
    •  I think David was very well prepared. The attendees were involved. The topic of discussion was well selected and well argued by all. I am looking forward to more gatherings.
    •  Lots of good discussion, too bad I had to leave early.
    •  As usual in my experience of this group, the conversation-discussion-debate was suggestive and spirited enough to provoke a bit. When, towards the end, I was one of four people left, the discussion veered into semi-impassioned judgments about FDR's 'New Deal' and whether Herbert Hoover and FDR were socialists and fascists, respectively (the point was made that this was in consideration of their politics, not their morality). I thought these issues were not really about the Law, Punishment, and the Justice system anymore (the original topic of the evening), but could be brought up in a discussion about political theory and ideology. A discussion on human nature could also be coming down the pike. Anyway, interesting and appreciated.
    •  I had lots of things to think about on the way home
