Debate: There is a rational warrant for belief in God.

NOTE: The location and time have changed: The event will be held on the 18th. at the Central Market on Coit and George Bush - the second floor community room.

This month, David Veksler will debate Joe Hinman on the topic of the existence of God.

David is the organizer of the Dallas Examined Life Philosophy meetup. Joe has a Master of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology and he's ABD in a PhD in Intellectual History from UTD. He has a blog at http://metacrock.blog...

Format: Joe will start start with a 10 minute presentation, then 10 mins. from David, then 3 rounds of rebuttals, 3-5 mins. each, then a closing from each speaker. After the debate, there will be an hourlong Q&A/open discussion.

If you would like to be a timekeeper/referee, please let me know.

How the term "God" is defined will crucially shape the discussion; I bet there won't be sufficient time to adequately consider a good range of concepts but it would be worth a try...

i've been a fan of philosophy for years, but this is the first philosophy debate that I've actually been excited to see. More like this and I'll become a regular.

I was going to ask Joe if he thinks it possible for someone to have a life-transformative, "transcendentally identifying," personal experience that leads one to conclude the universe is void of any divine intelligence or unifying consciousness. Why to the religious converts get to hog up all the experiencial revelation credit while nihilists like Nietze are sidelined and downplayed?

It was well-planned and organized. The participants were civil and well-informed. The format was useful in terms of giving both sides opportunties to present their ideas. The audience was given the chance to participate after the debate.

It was interesting but kept getting bogged down in repeated stuff and circular reasoning and missed points.

Excellent - stimulating - thought-provoking! What more could you ask for - Thanks David, Joe, Roger and everyone else for adding to my experience. I was really looking forward to this and was not disappointed.

I don't usually get into debating subjective points of view, but this was a lot of fun.

I am still on the fence though I did appreciate Joe and you giving me some notes so I can do further study on the subject.
