Shark River Cleanup

Someone just sent me an email about this, so I am posting it in case anyone is interested. The kayak clean-up of the Shark River will be Saturday, October 6th. Given the tides, they will be meeting around 9:30am and will be launching at 10:00am from the usual spot at Memorial Park. The cleanup will last for about 2 hours, and then everyone will be rewarded with a yummy lunch, as usual, provided by Nancy and Ben Smith and the Shark River Clean-up Coalition. For those of you who were able to participate in May, as you know, the lunch keeps getting better and better!

High winds and/or heavy rain will cancel. If you need any other information or unsure if the clean-up will take place, feel free to contact Ann at[masked]-8826. She will have her cell on the morning of the clean-up. Don't forget your kayak, gear, PFD and bug juice. Tall boots are highly recommended.

Thanks so much to all of you that participated in the cleanup. It takes a special person to give up a Saturday to pick up other people's trash. You guys are great! I have been participating in this cleanup for the past 4 years and in the past, the area of Mushquash Cove has been the focus of our cleanups. However, it appears that area has gotten much better, possibly due to our previous efforts. For the next cleanup in May, we could focus more on other areas, like the south side. Sounds like you could have used more help, Todd. A garbage barge (long kayak or canoe) would also be helpful. Thanks for sharing your photos, Rick!

What a wonderful day. We collected several bags of trash from along the shoreline, and then enjoyed a great feast. Check out my photos, and be sure to read the captions at the bottom of each picture. Look forward to doing this again in the Spring.

Agree with the comments...The south side of the river around the Wall dewatering pond was loaded with trash, and the island could have used two more workers. I am going to start earlier next time.

Picked up a fair amount of trash. Need to go to a different section of the river next year that has more garbage. Food was awesome!

Five stars for the food, it was great as usual, but we needed more trash to clean up.

To get an idea of what to expect on these clean-up paddles; you may want to check out some of the photos from the previous clean-up that we did on the Shark River back in June:
