Explore the old Railway line

Hi Folks,

Here is something a little different or if you had a blast at the Saturday night party you may want to join me in taking an afternoon walk along the old Singapore-Malaysia railway line. This will take us through parts of Singapore not usually seen by most and as it is a railway line the hills are only gentle.

We will meet at the Rail Mall on Upper Bukit Timah road at 2pm at the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. There we can have a coffee or you can go to the Cold Storage to stock up on water for the walk. From there we will walk towards town along the old Railway line (just watch out for mountain bikers). The aim is to get to Buona Vista MRT and if we are still feeling fresh then continue towards town or hop on the MRT and head home.

To get there you can take a taxi or bus No.s 67, 75, 170, 171, 178, 184, and 961 stop number 43051 heading north or stop number 43059 heading south.

I've been advised by a member who has done the walk that it can be quite muddy in places so please choose your footwear and clothing wisely to suit the conditions. In other words; leave the Gucci or any other high value footwear at home. Choose comfortable and practical footwear and clothing as it will probably get a bit messy along the way as we attempt to dodge puddles and mud. Bring along an umbrella in case it rains (or you may prefer to just get wet), a supply of water to drink on the way and of course comfortable clothing.

See you there and we can explore a bit of Singapore history.

It was a great walk with group. It took about 1 hour and 45 mins to get to our destination before the rain poured down.

That's the way to run an event like this ...leave it open to anyone who wants to come! You need to educate the many other meetup organizers who limit the group size of events like this and end up excluding lots of people. They seem to enjoy messing with rsvp, waiting lists and people who don't show up! Who wants to deal with all that? Your way males way more sense!

Hi Eric. For things like this it is easy to make it an open invitation but we hold many events where the venue places limits on attendees. As for up front money, we often ask for money or a deposit because it is us the organisers who have to put money up front for deposits or final payments and given we are unpaid volunteers it is not unreasonable to expect the attendees to pay up front either. No one on the organising committee likes losing their own money when people say they will turn up but don't pay because WE lose money personally. Everyone saying yes to a paid event must be serious about it because WE base our bookings on the numbers who way yes. I hope you and everyone else in the meet up group appreciates that.

Yes, for the types of events you mentioned the lists and/or advance payment make sense.

    Hi Stephanie,

There are a few MRT options but all involve buses to get to the Rail Mall as despite the name the Rail Mall does not have an MRT stop - yet (if we wait a couple of years the new line will stop there - but the meet up is this weekend). These options are:
    - Clementi MRT on the East West (green) Line and take bus 184.
    - Bukit Batok MRT on the North West (red) Line and take bus 178 (it doesn't leave from the bus terminal but from a stop across the road from the terminal).
    - Botanic Gardens MRT on the Circle (yellow) Line and take either 67, 170, or 171.
    - Holland Village MRT on the Circle (yellow) Line and take bus 75 from the stop above Holland Village on Holland Village road.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,
    Evan.

Hi Eric. I have absolutely no idea - I just figured 'what the hell let's do it'. But being in Singapore it will definitely be less than 50 Kms. To take a guess it could be about 10kms or less. But there are plenty of places to get off the walk if you don't want to go all the way to Buona Vista.
