Beach BBQ, Surfing, Volleyball, Bonfire, and More...!

Come on down to Surf City for the ultimate, classic California beach party! There will be a BBQ, Beach Volleyball for all skill levels, Surf Lessons, a Bocce Ball tournament, and a big Bonfire for cooking smores at the end of the day!

Relax in the sun, throw around a Frisbee or football, or just hang out and meet your fellow group members. This Experience THIS! event is meant to give you an opportunity to try some traditional California beach experiences and at the same time provide a place to just come and hang out with the group. And what better place to have it than the historical Surf City of Huntington Beach!

Of course it doesn't hurt that they are one of only two places that allow bonfires on the beach. All of the individual events here are optional, so do as many or as few as you feel like. Here are some more details:

Surf Lessons: Learn how to ride the waves with instruction provided by Zack's Surf Shop right by the Huntington Beach pier. Lessons are $75 and they give you everything you need, which is basically a board and wetsuit. For the first hour you get hands on instruction on shore and in the water, then you get to keep the board for another couple hours to practice on your own. Surfing can be pretty tiring if you haven't done it before, so this way you can take the hour lesson, rest for a bit, then go in and out of the surf at your own pace. I will be putting up a separate event for the surfing piece so that people can RSVP just for that and give me a good head count. If you are more experienced and don't need the lessons you can bring your own gear or rent from Zach's, whatever fits.

Beach Volleyball: There are a lot of nets, so I will try and take one over close to our beach camp. Instruction will be provided by yours truly since this is one experience I have done a lot! I am intending this to be for people who have never/rarely touched a volleyball, so you don't have to have prior experience. If you have played some or a lot before, you are welcome to put a game together with other group members, or even join one of the other matches that are taking place on the beach.

Bocce Ball Tournament: This is a really fun game, very accessible to everyone, and whenever I have shown people how to play they go away loving it. The game revolves around throwing some croquet size balls and trying to come close to a target in the sand. There are a few rules, but the team with the closest toss wins the game. We will have a chance to play and get a feel for it, then have a little tournament for those that are interested.

BBQ/Food/Drinks: We will have a little portable grill there for grilling hot dogs. I will probably bug people to bring a bag of chips or something to help round out the snacks. Of course if you want to bring something to grill you are more than welcome to do that too. For drinks I will bring water, but I can't afford other items and don't want to charge people to come so please bring other drinks if you want something besides water.

Beach Bonfire: Nothing says California Beach Party like a bonfire on the beach! Sadly there are only two places you can legally do this, Huntington Beach is one, and Dockweiler is the other. Dockweiler is closer to LAX, literally under the flight path of departing planes, and pretty dirty, so not really an option for us. I will bring the wood and we will have some stuff to make smores for those of you who want some 'more' food. (sorry, couldn't resist the pun).

Frisbee/Football/Etc.: I'll bring a few other normal beach stuff like this. I don't have much of that, so let me know if you would like to bring some items as well.

Luxury items: I am planning to have a couple sun shade tents. One will be for the food/drink area, and the other can be for people to sit under. I doubt this will fit everyone who wants to be in the shade, and is first come first serve. You can bring a shade if you have it, and sunscreen doesn't hurt either! I also have a few chairs I can bring.

On the Time: I will be there very, very early in order to get us a spot with a fire pit. If you want to surf, I am planning the group lesson for 1:00pm. Outside of that, the time is pretty flexible. As we get closer and I have a better feel for who wants to play volleyball we might suggest a time for that to start, but I will leave that open for the moment. The Bonfire will start as the sun begins to set over the ocean.

On Parking: Parking in Huntington Beach can be challenging, so I am picking a non holiday weekend in the hopes it won't be as bad. Parking lots run about $15, and there is street parking if you don't mind a bit of a walk. I will have the tents up and the orange Life is Good banner up so you can find us. Also, I am going to pick out a target spot so I can give you better directions in advance. It won't be far from the pier.

Fees/What to Bring: I don't want to charge anything for this experience, so if you are okay with BBQ hot dogs and plenty of water, then everything else I am providing is free, just come on down. Zach's charges for the surf lessons of course, but those are optional. Outside of that, if you want to bring some snacks or a few drinks then that certainly helps. Just let me know ahead of time so we don't end up with 20 bags of Doritos.

I am probably forgetting some details, but I will keep this updated as I have more to publish. See you at the Beach!!

UPDATE:  Directions

Here are the directions to where we will be set up.  Please print it out or write them down!

We will be located just south of the Huntington Beach Pier where the bonfire pits first start.  The closest intersection the Pacific Coast Highway and 1st Street.  There is a parking lot that lies between the PCH and the beach and cost $15 for the day.  The entrance to the parking lot is on the corner of PCH and 1st.  I am betting that this parking lot will fill up in the morning, so you may have to find street parking, a parking garage, or another lot, then walk over.

I am attaching a map below so that you can see the location.  In addition, I will send you an e-mail with the directions and my cell number in case you run into problems.

UPDATE:  Dress

During the day it will of course be very hot.  However, when the sun is going down and we fire up the bonfire it can get chilly.  You might want to bring a sweatshirt, blanket or something to keep you warm if the fire isn't enough.

Had a great time with everyone at this Meetup! I wish I had gotten more pictures, especially of the Bocce Ball and Bonfire, but I truly enjoyed the entire day, thanks to everyone for coming out!

@Jess: Hello! I bet we will be able to work out some carpools. My guess is that next week will start to have a good idea of everyone who is coming and by then we should be able to offer ideas on a meeting point for those that want to carpool.

This would be my first meetup and I'd love to make it! Anybody coming from Pasadena who might be interested in picking me up?? Carpooling saves money on gas and parking... :)

I agree, we should try to carpool where possible. Hopefully there are some people up in your area, or maybe even meet at a central point like on westside somewhere.

I would be interested only if I could get a ride with someone. I live in the West San Fernando Valley (Canoga Park). Does anybody live close to me and could help me out?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
